This document outlines an experiment to study the DC characteristics of an avalanche photo diode (APD). The experiment involves measuring the voltage-current relationship of the APD and plotting its responsivity characteristics. To do this, a power supply, multimeter, LED, fiber optic cable, and APD are connected as shown in the experimental setup. The threshold voltage of the APD is determined by varying the applied voltage and measuring the corresponding current. The responsivity is measured by holding the applied voltage constant and varying the LED current to obtain different load voltages, which are then plotted. Tabulated data of the voltage, current, and load voltage measurements are presented.

AIM: To study the DC characteristics of Avalanche Photo Diode.
APPARATUS REQUIRED: Power Supply Patch Cord Multimeter Fiber Optic Cable LED APD
EXPERIMENTAL SETUP:
EXPT NO: DATE: MODEL GRAPHS:
PROCEDURE: Connections are made as per the experimental setup. To find V TH and for plotting V-I characteristics of LED: I LED (current through LED)
is kept constant at a particular value. By changing V AK , the corresponding voltage across load resistance, V RL is noted down. A graph is plotted with V AK vs I APD and the threshold voltage V TH is found out from the graph. To plot responsivity characteristics of APD: A particular value of V AK (V TH ) is selected and kept constant. For various values of I LED (mA), the corresponding values of V RL is noted down. The same procedure is repeated for other values of V AK (V TH , >V TH , <V TH ). The graph is also plotted.
TABULATION: 1. V-I Characteristics of APD:
I LED = 14mA R L = 100k V AK (V) V RL (mV) I APD (A) 9 12 15 18 21 24 27 30 33 36
2. Responsivity Characteristics of APD:
V AK (V) I LED (mA) V RL (mV) V RL (mV) V RL (mV) 2 4 6 8 10 12 14
RESULT: Thus the DC characteristics of Avalanche Photo Diode have been studied.
