Comprehensible Input is SLA

Krashen's
Input
Hypothesis
Comprehensible
Input
Humans acquire
language in only one
way - by
understanding
messages or by
receiving
comprehensible input
(i+1 !ne step beyond
the learner"s current
language ability (i# to
continue to progress
to the ne$t level ( 1

According to Long (1982)
The main assumptions of the rashen!s input hypothesis
are as follo"s#
(1) access to comprehensible input is characteristic of all
cases of successful language ac$uisition% in both first and
second language ac$uisition
(2) greater $uantities of comprehensible input seem to
result in better or faster L2 ac$uisition
(&) lac' of access to comprehensible input results in little
or no ac$uisition

Three potential sources to ma'e input
comprehensible for SLA#
1( )odified input
The input that has been modified*simplified in some"a+
before the learner sees or hears it
2( Interactionall+ )odified Input
In "hich a ,S interacts "ith an ,,S% "here both
parties modif+ and restructure the interaction to arri-e at
mutual understanding
&( )odified .utput
/here a learner modifies his*her output to ma'e it
more target0li'e*to ma'e it more comprehensible to the
interlocutor

Interactionall+ )odified Input
and )odified .utput in an
interactional conte1t seem to be
more beneficial than )odified
Input in terms of raising
comprehensibilit+
