At my house
This poem tell about the slaves and their point of view on things

"These are the woes of Slaves;
They glare from the abyss;
They cry, from unknown graves,
"We are the Witnesses!""
The poem talks about the slaves' struggles and pains and what they have to endure day in and day
out. Longefellow is really trying to covey just how badly the slaves really were treated, and how
wrong they were done.
Poem; Very little symbolism; dark, sorrowful tone
This poem really opens my eyes to the what the African slaves really had to go through. What is exactly
meant by the Longfellow when he uses the term "The Witnesses?" This poem is poetic to me because
it overcomes me with a feeling of sorrow and sympathy

In my room
"Its in the click of my heels,
The bend of my hair,
the palm of my hand,
The need for my care.
Cause Im a woman
Phenomenally.
Phenomenal woman,
Thats me."
This poem is about how great the condence of the writer is, despite everything and everyone
who tries to tell her that she is not. The theme of the poem is just that, to believe in yourself
because you are "phenomenal."
The poem is very direct and outright about its message. No symbolism, just a girl stating that she
is a "phenomenal woman" and that men love her
Im not a black woman living in her time, so this poem has no direct personal experience in it for me. It was
interesting though, because I like a condent people, and this woman in the poem is denitely condent about
herself. What has given her such condence in life? She is a black female living in a time when black females
were treated as garbage. I live in a time where I get just as much respect as the next guy, and yet I don't have
half the amount of condence she does. This poem's message did rub o! onto me and give me some belief in
myself because if she can do it, I most certainly can as well.
