Gurbani Recitation is our minds Diet

QUITE OFTEN IN LIFE WE HAVE to encounter

questions trom a section of learned people that when
one has understood the meaning or the message as
conveyed in Gurbani by reciting it once, then what is
the necessity of repeating it on daily basis? In some
cases they dont just raise the question about the
significance of this noble tradition, but easily jumps to
the conclusion that the practice of recitation of Gurbani
on regular basis is an act followed either by simple
innocent people or by fanatics. It is pity that such
ignorance about the importance of NAAM SIMRAN is
even easily traceable in the educated class of the
society. Often such ignorant person argues that His
better to start a day by reading Newspaper and watching
Movies or Television programmes rather than reciting
NITNEM Banis.
In this short paper a humble attempt is made to clear
the doubts about the Simran Philosophy or recitation
of Gurbani on daily basis, that may have aroused in
the minds of a section of the people due to sheer
ignorance about the importance of divinely inspired
wisdom in human life.
I can say from my experience that a careful daily
study of Gurbani helps us to be more focused and
balanced in our thought and actions. As our mind
is subtle by nature, it tends to sway and oscillate due
to ever-changing activities or challenges that we
experience on daily basis. Therefore, if we understand
the technique of controlling our thought waves, our
mind can become fountainhead of harmony and peace.
And this technique can only be attained through daily
recitation with total concentration - of Gurbani paath.

O my mind, chant the Name with intuitive peace and
poise. Twenty-four hours a day, meditate on God.
Constantly sing the Glories of the Lord of the Universe.
To enjoy the mystical experience of Gurbani one
need to sit in silence to recite the Soul soothing Banis
of Sukhmani Sahib or any other hymns from Sri Guru

Granth Sahib. The continuity of this routine will help

you to realize a unique feelings of inner ecstasy and
thereafter, you will be bound to wait anxiously for such
moments to come everyday.
When we engage our self in the study of Gurbani
it keeps us away from all kinds ot negative thought
process that tends to disturb our life and provide us with
those blissful moments which in Gurbani refer as Amrit
Vela.
According to the Principles of Sound in Physics,
when something in rhythmic sound is being repeated in
a systematic manner, under the rotation of a fixed time
period, it produces a kind of musical measurements
known as Sur or Raaga. And that systematic
arrangement of sound makes it sweet to our ears and
mind. Similarly, recitation of Gurbani, which is
available in the form of poetry, using specific Raagas
as guided by our glorious gurus leaves a soothing effect
on our mind and hearts.
According to Gurmat Philosophy the Formless and
Timeless God, Creator of the Universe, resides in all
nature, in each of us; to realize His holy presence we
have to have an awakened soul and that can only be
invoked through constant practice of Naam Simran.
The three most significant ways as envisaged in
Gurbani to concentrate our distracting minds are the
deep and careful study of Gurbani, to do or to listen
to gurbani keertan and daily practice of Naam
Simran. Whosoever train himself on this line of gurbani
guidance will surely have a glimps of Gods presence
within his or her mind and heart and will ultimately
realize the mystery of His existence in nature.

the Lords Name constantly, over and over again.
Finally we should always remember that Repetition
leads to Harmony, Harmony leads to Peace and
Peace leads to God.
