Lesson Title & Big Idea: You and Yourself. Big Idea Heroes Grade Level: 4
th

Lesson Purpose: The purpose of this lesson is to have students to see themselves as heroes though photographs to
expose their identity as a person as well as those in their community. I will use photos of Ann Frank to demonstrate that
we all can be heroes and each of us is different. This lesson will implement the arts using a camera to take photographs
and social studies to provide examples of photographs of Ann Frank and her life as a hero to many during her lifetime.


Class Periods Required: 4-5
Key Concepts (2-3):
- Heroes are individual with a strong hearth, courage, and the ability to
make hard decisions.
- Heroes can be found all though history no matter their so-called
status, heroes can even be found in our own community.
- Artists like John Romita Jr., Frank Miller, and Norman Rockwell have
portray ordinary people as heroes.


Essential Questions (2-3):
1. Who can be a Hero?
2. What characterizes define a person a hero?
3. How do photographs portray heroes?

1. Students will interpret a series of photographs though a visual art experience as well as a hands-on learn though taking photographs of the heroes
we see everyday, including themselves as heroes in their own community.
2. Students will build their knowledge on everyday heroes and how Ann Frank was a person just like us. This allows students to see the concept of
heroes and students will be able to discuses and define what a heroes is to them.
3. Students will grow their own understanding of heroes as they analyze photographs and identify information about Ann Frank and what she meant to
people in her community. Each student will be able to identify heroes in their everyday lives and visually photograph those heroes in their
community and explain why there are consider a hero.

Lesson Activities & Procedure(s):
Day 1:
Students will be exposed with pictures of heroes in their community,
such as firemen, police, nurses, or anyone in their community that
would be consider a hero. During this time we will be lead in a
discussion about Ann Frank and how she BECAME a hero and her
story. The book Diary of Ann Frank will be read before this unit and
students will have prior knowledge of Ann Frank.
Day 2
Students will be given cameras and a list of people that would be
consider heroes in their community (list from pervious class period).
Students will then be instructed to take photographs of heroes in
their community and interview them about why they do the job they
do.
Day 3
Students will be engaged in a number of photos of Ann Frank and her
story. Students will also watch a series of History Channel videos of
Ann Frank. The teacher will ask students the essential questions

And the teacher will use VTS to engage students in activity.
Who can be a Hero?
What makes a person a hero?
How photographs portray a hero?
Day 4
Students will had receive a camera on the first day of the project and
will have been taking picture over a weekend, we would have started
the project on a Thursday, and end the unit on day 4. Students will
bring in their photographs they took over the weekend. We will use
VTS and display the students work over the smart board and discuses
what makes these individuals heroes, we will end this unit with a
reflection on what students learned about heroes, how Anna frank
was a hero just like the people in our community. The reflection will
consist of students writing pieces and sharing it with the class on
what they have learned.
The reflection will be a power point presentation that student will
create in the computer lab during writing. Student will come up with
4 to 5 slides to present what they have learned about heroes.
Day 5
Student will present their project to the class.

Lesson adaptations for challenged learners:
Learners that cannot use a camera device or any kind of media to
capture a hero in their community, then student would provide a
power point presentation or collage poster to show heroes in their
community.



Formative Assessment strategies:
I will formative assess my students by meeting with them after each day to
see how they are doing on the project and this assessment will be done by
students volunteering to sign up to meet with me. Student will be given a
rubric checklist to help them gather all the information they need for the
project.
Summative Assessment strategy:
The class will be assesses though using VTS to see how students participate
in classes. Students will also be assessed by the teacher meeting one on one
with students and the reflection piece students presentation at the end of
the unit.


What student prior knowledge will this lesson require/draw upon?

Students will have prior knowledge about photographs and how they display an image that evokes emotions, visions, and a statement that viewers
can draw upon. Students have prior knowledge about Anna Frank and how she was a hero to many. Student will understand that we have heroes in
our community and we as a class will build upon these ideas to find our who their true heroes are and why.


How will you engage students in imagining, exploring, and/or experimenting in this lesson?
Students will experiment with a number of media devices as well as interact with other people in their community as well as using narrative writing
and VTS discussions, discussion, and photography filters to create their work.



How will this lesson allow for/encourage students to solve problems in divergent ways?
Student will engage in the lesson by solving problems in a number of ways including VTS questions, with open-ended questions and discussion. As
well as using media to display their understand of heroes.


How will you engage students in routinely reflecting on their learning?
VTS will allow the teacher to routinely reflect on students learning.

How will this lesson engage students in assessing their own work and the work of peers?
Student will work in a computer lab to make the presentation; this will allow students to work together though cooperative learning.

What opportunities/activities will students be given to revise and improve their understandings and their work?
Students will be able to reflect on their project after the presentation, then student will be able to revise and improve their presentation for a final
grade.


What opportunities/activities will you provide for students to share their learning in this lesson?
Students will be able to share their projects with the class though a presentation at the end of the unit.
