MASS BALANCE FOR HYDRATED LIME (Ca(OH)

2
)

Reaction:
2Ca(OH)
2
+ 2Cl
2
= Ca(ClO)
2
+ CaCl
2
+ 2H
2
O

Molecular mass of Ca(OH)
2
= 74
Molecular mass of Cl
2
= 71
Molecular mass of Ca(ClO)
2
= 143
Molecular mass of CaCl
2
= 111
Molecular mass of H
2
O = 18
According to law of mass conservation: Total mass of reactants = Total mass of
products.
(2 * 74) + (2 * 71) = 143 + 111 + (2 * 18)
148 + 142 = 143 + 111 + 36
290 = 290

Purity of Ca(OH)
2
= 90% w/w

1) For 290 kg of SBP required Hydrated Lime = 148*(100/90) = 164.5 Kg
For 1 kg of SBP required hydrated Lime = 164.5/290 = 0.567 Kg
For 1000 kg of SBP required Hydrated Lime = .567 * 1000 = 567 Kg
2) The final SBP contains 27% free Ca(OH)
2
which is 153 Kg.
Therefore total Ca(OH)
2
used = 567+153 = 720 Kg
Efficiency of Ca(OH)
2
per MT of SBP = 720/1000 = .72 MT for 1 MT of SBP

LOSS OF Ca(OH)
2
DURING PROCESS
Ca(OH)
2
loss during shifting by truck = .004 MT
Sludge generation from SBP plant at production level = 45 MT/day
Clarifier sludge = 30 MT/month (including moisture 60%)
Phase - 3pit = 3 MT/month (including moisture 60%)
Total sludge produced = 33 MT/month (including moisture 60%)
Total sludge produced = 13.2 MT/month (without moisture)
Sludge SBP generated per MT = 9.8 kg
Total loss = (.004 + .0098) MT = .0138 MT
Efficiency of Ca(OH)
2
per MT of SBP = (.72+.0138) = .7338

Other losses
The acceptability limit of Hydrated Lime purity is 88%, which results
0.75 MT/MT Efficiency of Hydrated Lime.
