AD in Aberdeen

Overview
Of the total waste accumulated and disposed of in
Scotland(4,766,460 tonnes) via landfill or
incineration, more than a third was Household and
Similar Wastes (1,817,999 tonnes).
Only 68,721 tonnes was recycled, a mere 3.78%
From 2004-2009, waste management sites accounted for
81% of the total reported emissions


Harness into Biogas, Electricity & Heat

Hypothesis
The implementation of a centralised AD plant in
Aberdeen will complement the councils waste
management strategy, whilst contributing
towards the Scottish Governments aims to
reduce the countrys carbon emissions

Aims
Evaluate the accuracy of the hypotheses,
providing a recommendation on the contrivance
of AD in Aberdeenshire, correlating with the
Councils Waste Management Strategy and the
Scottish Governments Low Carbon Scotland
Report, whilst also assessing the financial
viability of such an option.

Objectives
Provide an overview of AD technology and
Identify the importance of AD as part of a waste
management strategy
Establish the factors imperative to a successful
AD plant in Aberdeenshire
Evaluate the economic factors attributed to AD
plant construction and operation, deriving the
financial viability in Aberdeenshire
Provide a recommendation on how to set up a
functional AD plant in Aberdeen
