COMPARISON OF RELATIONAL

VERSUS DOCUMENT DATABASES

DESCRIPTION With the "big data" trend new storage models are
emerging. The goal of this internship is to evaluate opportunities for using
document databases instead of traditional RDBMS, with the following
steps:
Study the fundamental of NoSQL to build up technical background for
the next steps
Port an existing mid-sized application based on MySQL to MongoDB
(an open source document database, the leading NoSQL database)
Use this experience to compare MySQL and MongoDB, highlighting the
advantages and drawbacks of each solution.

OBJECTIVES
Get up to speed with the necessary technologies.
Re-engineer an existing JEE application from MySQL to MongoDB.
Provide an overview of key features and shortcomings of both
approaches.
Define and compare some relevant benchmarks (e.g. # lines of code to
implement common scenarios, query execution time, insert execution
time, database size ).


KNOWLEDGE / SKILLS REQUIRED
Software development in the JEE environment, Java.
Some knowledge of SQL databases and Spring MVC would be plus.
