John Marenbon
Senior Research Fellow, Trinity College, University of Cambridge
John Marenbon has written extensively about Peter Abelard
throughout his career, including The Philosophy of Peter Abelard
(Cambridge, 1997). He has published: From the Circle of Alcuin to the
School of Auxerre (Cambridge, 1981) and Boethius (Oxford University
Press, 2003). A collection of his articles appeared as Aristotelian Logic,
Thursday, November 12 “ The Present: Abelard Himself ” Platonism, and the Context of Early Medieval Philosophy in the West
(A reception will follow the lecture) (Variorum Collected Studies, 2000). His other scholarly interests
focus on methodological issues about the history of philosophy and his
Tuesday, November 17 “ The Past: Abelard’s Dialogue with most recent research project deals with the medieval concept of good
Anselm’s Ethics ” pagans. In addition, he has produced well-regarded survey volumes on
early and later medieval philosophy.
Thursday, November 19 “ The Future: Abelard’s Contention
that God Can Do Only What It Every year, through the generosity of University Trustee Robert M.
` Does, and Its Fortune ” Conway, a distinguished senior medievalist offers a series of three
public lectures that subsequently are collected and published as a
single volume.
