KWHL Follow Up Activities

1. How will the KWHL Chart be presented in the classroom? Circle Time? Small Group
Activity? Tell the name of the specific activity.
The KWHL chart will be introduced during the second day of class in a
circle time activity called Getting to know Mr. Caterpillar. It will also be
reintroduced during the last day of class in order to fill in the L portion of
the KWHL chart.

2. What take home activity will be used to encourage parent involvement? (This activity
should be mentioned in your parent letter):
The take home activity to encourage parent involvement will be creating a home for
the childrens caterpillars using jars, grass, twigs, leaves, and flowers provided in
class or through donations.
I also posted links in the parent letter to encourage the parents to explore all the
potential exhibits available in the museum with their children at their leisure.

3. Specify two specific small group activities that will be used to follow up the W portion
of the KWHL chart. Tell the names of the specific activities and state what you will be
doing.
In Going Down To Mexico the children will examine why the caterpillars
leave North America and travel to Mexico during the winter. We will be
participating in a song about the great Monarch butterfly movement that
occurs every October and the children will get to examine maps of the US as
well as Mexico to chart the migration from one country to another.
The children will also examine the different qualities between the butterfly
and moth in I am a Butterfly Not a Moth. The children will be examining
and listing the different qualities of butterflies and moths to gain a better
understanding of these unique creatures. They will first start off by creating
a Venn diagram based on their current understanding and theories related to
the qualities, attributes, and colors of moths and butterflies. We will then
explore the subject deeper by partaking in art projects related to exploring
the differences between the two insects by creating representations of the
moths and butterflies.
