Piezometers are used to measure groundwater levels and water pressure. They consist of a porous stone or perforated pipe attached to a plastic standpipe installed in a borehole. If a borehole fills with water during exploration, the water level will stabilize within 24 hours in permeable soils, allowing direct measurement. In impermeable soils, the water level may take weeks to stabilize, requiring a piezometer for periodic checks until equilibrium is reached. A piezometer isolates the borehole from surrounding groundwater with filters and seals to precisely measure subsurface pressures.

Methods of observation and measurement of ground water and water
pressure using Piezometer. If water is encountered in a borehole during a field exploration, that fact should be recorded. In soils with high hydraulic conductivity, the level of water in a borehole will stabilize about 24 hours after completion of the boring. The depth of the water table can then be recorded by lowering a chain or tape into the borehole. In highly impermeable layers, the water level in a borehole may not stabilize for several weeks. In such cases, if accurate water -level measurements are required, a piezometer can be used. A piezometer basically consists of a porous stone or a perforated pipe with a plastic standpipe attached to it. At figure below shows the general placement of a piezometer in a borehole. This produce will allow periodic checking until the water level stabilizes.
