Common name- Trematodes
HOSTS/HOW YOU GET IT
The eggs are released into fresh water through
feces and are then transmitted to snails until the
eggs hatch. The worms then leave the snails body
and can remain in the water for 24 to 48 hours.
Infection occurs when skin comes in contact with
the contaminated fresh water.
SYMPTOMS
Rash, itchy skin, fever, chills, a cough, and muscle aches after 1 2 months after
infection.
FUTURE SYMPTOMS
The eggs of the parasite can travel to the intestine, liver, and bladder causing
intense inflammation and scarring.

Children who are repeatedly exposed can develop anemia, malnutrition, and
learning disabilities.

If left untreated damage to the liver, intestines, lungs, and bladder can occur.

Eggs have been found rarely in the brain and spinal cord causing seizures
and in some cases paralysis.
TREATMENT
Praziquantel a prescription
medication taken for 1 2 days
OUTCOME
If treated when the symptoms first occur this is a very manageable disease of which a person can
make a full recover. However if left untreated the result could lead to irreparable damage to the
brain, liver, lungs, and intestines.
