Reading Standards for Literature



RL 7 With prompting and support, describe the relationship between illustrations and the story in
which they appear (e.g. what moment in a story an illustration depicts)
RL 9 With prompting and support, compare and contrast the adventures and experiences of
characters in familiar stories.

Visual Arts Standard

1.3 Identify the elements of art (line, color, shape/form, texture, value, space) in the environment
and in works of art, emphasizing line, color, and shape/form.
3.1 Describe functional and non-utilitarian art seen in daily life; that is, works of arts that are used
versus those that are only viewed.
3.2 Identify and describe works of art that show people doing things together.
4.1 Discuss their own works of art, using appropriate art vocabulary (e.g. color, shape/form, texture)
4.2 Describe what is seen (including both literal and expressive content) in selected works of art.

Visual Analysis

Students will visually examine works of art and learn
tools to analyze and discuss the visual elements seen.
Use these strategies with any book being read in the
classroom to describe the relationship between
illustrations and text. Also, use these strategies to
compare and contrast similar stories. With teacher

Cinderella Trilogy

Students will compare and contrast three culturally
distinct variations of the Cinderella folktale. You can
use any versions of a story to compare. Have students
analyze the illustrations for art elements and possibly
create their own story/illustration. With teacher
support.
