The document summarizes the technique for using a Krautkramer USK-7 portable ultrasonic flaw detector. It outlines that the surface must be clean and free of debris before examination. The weld will be scanned from both sides using angled probes to detect root and body defects, employing zig-zag scanning at half and full skip distances. Angled probes will be selected based on material thickness, and scanning speed must not exceed 6 inches per second to recognize small reflectors. Any discontinuity over 20% of the reference level will be measured for acceptance against specifications. Defects found will be identified and recorded.

The USK-7 has a well earned reputation for ruggedness and reliability. This is a very popular instrument for field weld inspection and other basic flaw detection applications. This instrument is in like-new condition and complete with NiCad batteries, charger and an operation manual. Completely checked out by our service department and offered with current calibration. One year warranty covering all components except batteries and CRT TECHNIQUE
4.4 Prior to examination, areas to be tested shall be stipulated by the client. The surface to be examined and all adjacent areas within at least 25.4mm of testing area shall be dry and free of all dirt, grease, scale, welding flux and spatter, all extraneous matter that may interfere with the examination. The angle beam scanning zone shall be scanned using a zero degree probe to check for laminar type defects.
4.5 The weld shall then be scanned from both sides of the weld from the same plate surface, using at least 2 of the angle probes to locate root defects and weld body defects, employing zig zag (at half skip and full skip distance) and transverse scanning technique. Scanning sensitivity shall be set (minimum) at + 6dB of primary response level. Defect evaluation shall be based on the sensitivity at primary response level.
4.6 Angle probes shall be selected according to thickness e.g.
4.7 Scanning speed shall be such to ensure visual recognition of small reflectors and shall not exceed 6 inch/sec. Each scan shall have an overlap of a minimum of 10% of previous scanned area.
4.8 Any discontinuity with echo amplitude greater than 20% of the reference level shall be measured for length using 6dB drop, depth, echo amplitude and classified as rounded, elongated and planner, to determine their acceptance or rejection as per the specification. Indication classified as crack, lack of fusion or incomplete penetration is not acceptable regardless of length.
4.9 Any defect areas found shall be identified and recorded.
