Preface
For the reproduction of the Italian text the principle was
applied not to change anything which is not absolutely
necessary. To improve the readability for the unpractised
eye, the three music examples have been rendered into
modern notation, i.e. the for those times typical notation
of the left hand part on a eight line stave has been set on
a modern ve line stave with modern clefs.
Used for the translation of the text has been: la Fontana della Crusca, Dizionario Italiano-Tedesco da Nic.

Respecting order and brevity, which is required in all discussions when we are going to talk about the music instruments, we have primarily to devide them along our
subject and as given by the material.
Per tanto divideremo essi stromenti in duoi ordini: cioe in Thus we will divide the instruments into two classes, i.e.
alcuni, come fondamento: et in altri, come ornamento.
in one class as fundament and one as ornament.
u
cioe Leuto, Tiorba, Arpa, Lirone, Cetera, Spinetto, Chitarrina, Violino, Pandora et altri simili.
Furthermore about the instruments: there are string instruments and wind instruments.
Di questi secondi (eccetuando lOrgano) non diremo cosa I will not talk about the latter (except the organ), since
alcuna, per non esser in uso ne buoni e dolci conserti, they are not used in good and sweet ensembles, because
per la poca unione con quei di corde, e per lalteratione, they merge little with string instruments, and because of
cagionata loro dal ato umano,
the altering [of pitch] due to the human breath.
3 Gravicembalo means obviously a long harpsichord, which was used to support the bass part. We do not have explicite descriptions neither preserved instruments from Agazzaris time. The estimated
dimensions of the harpsichords in pictures from Corellis open air performances and the dimensions of a preserved instrument from about 1700 [14] permit the conclusion that at Corellis time in Italy,
harpsichords with 16 stops were used. The one preserved had even two 16 food stops. However, for the time being it can only be subject of speculation if Agazzari is talking about a similar type of instrument
or some kind of predecessor.
a

terplay of voices9 are musical motifs and are subordinated
to the text and not vice versa.
And this we will defend with all the reasons in occasion.
5 Spartitura is the predecessor of the modern score: the part made by an organist or luthist etc. where the music is written in superimposed lines and ordered by vertical bars. But this term is also used for
any basso continuo like part, e.g. a gured bas line.
6 Harmony, as it was understood at Agazzaris time, was a consequence of the mutual movement of the voices and their melodies.
9 The term harmony has to be used with caution since it has changed its meaning a lot.
[P. 5]
And in fact, how easy and therefore even more, one could
set up some rules for playing, but where there is a text, one
needs to dress it with the corresponding harmony which
achieves or shows the corresponding aect.

And who is playing the luth which is the noblest instrument among the others, should play it in a noble way with
much inventiveness and diversity; not as some do who have a good dexterity and do nothing than tirare and play
diminutions from the begin to the end and mostly together
with the other instruments which do the same, which sounds like nothing than a soup and a confusion, being displeasant to the listener.

perci` chi suona lirone, deve tirare larcate lunge, chiare,

Thus, so that all instruments show their particular properties, the player should take them into consideration
and use them conformly if he wants to do a good job.
As the words tell: the string instruments have dierent
properties then those which are plucked or hit:
Who is playing the lirone for instance, should play with a
long bow, clear and sonorous, well observing the middle
parts, watching the thirds and the major and minor sixths,
being a dicult and important matter of this instrument.

But if someone says to me that for playing the old works

Ja sogar zur selben Zeit singt jede Stimme einen anderen Text, was fr aufmerksame, verstndige Menschen

u
a
a
o
Thus, with much reason such bass has become into use as
shown above: concluding that there is no need and it is
not necessary for the player to make the parts audible as
they are written, as one plays for the singing and not for
playing the work as it is written, which is dierent from
our subject.
And that what was stated here, shall be sucient for all
that could be said, since I wanted more to shortly satisfy your kind questions; rather than satisfying my genius
which wants more to learn from others than to do teaching.

Notes
loro nel conserto is one of the few extensive sources on
basso continuo in the early baroque which are handed
down to us. Nevertheless, together with the instructions
of Viadana [1] and Bianciardi [2] which have been printed
about at the same time, a quite detailed picture of the
basso continuo practice in middle Italy in the early 17th
centuryor more general of the Nuove Musiche, the new
Italian musiccan be obtained. The source is written in
such a clear style that a pararaph by paragraph discussion does not seem to be much valuable. However, when
translating a source, some additional information is accumulating which Ill give here in a sort of loose collection.
Agostino Agazzaris birth date and place are unknown.
But he must have been born around 1580. The fact that
he and his father Cesare were accepted as Siena patricians (Nobile Sanese) upon their own demand, as well
as his good education and his contact with the upperclass, points out that he himself must have been born
into this social environment. Between 1597 and 1641 he
served as organist at Siena cathedral for several periods
of some years, at times for a salary more than twice as
much than his predeccessors and successors had been earning. This points out his reputation as excellent organist
and improvisor. Between 1602 and 1606 he served for two
rather short periods as maestro di capella at two dierent churches in Rome, to which he refers several times
in his treatise as reference of a city with up to datemusic
the title page of his treatise. A description of the ceremony is preserved. One can speculate that he contributed
music to the meetings of the academy. Further information about Agazzaris work and biographic details can be
found in [11].
The geographical and political situation in Italy around
1600 may be called patchylarge parts of the south belonged to the Spanish crown, in the north, inuence of
Habsburg, Savoy and the French crwon were important.
Furthermore, there were the Papal state, the free republics and cities in the north as well as some larger and
smaller earldoms. Accordingly rich was the cultural situation. In Middle-Italy, the new style of composing was already fully established around 1600. In the north, the old
counterpoint style, declined by Agazzari, remained still
for some decades, including a variety of mixed formes. In
the north of the alps, the inuence of the new Italian style growed fast by the import of Italian musicians and
study journeys of prospective maestri di cappelle to the
south.
The importance of Agazzaris treatise for his contemporary musicians can be estimated from the fast spreading
of the document. In Germany, it was obviously taken as
a reference, as showen by citations, translations and comments, to most extend in Michael Praetorius music encyclopedy Syntagma Musicum [3]. Important for the todays
performer with interest in historical performance practice
is of course the extensive discussion of the large number of instruments which were participating in the basso
continuo group in the early Italian baroque. Except the
explicitely excluded wind instruments, Agazzari treats indeed practally all instruments which participated in the
ocial music. The title Con Tutti Li Stromenti couldnt
thus be more precise. By his comments on the reasons why
the new style had etablished in Rome, he shows himself
as compromissless protagonist of this new style, which is
strongly inuenced by the new monody, and which is to
be found around 1600 mostly in Naples, Rome and Flo21
21 The importance especially of Ganassis instructions [7] is hard to estimate, as there is no other comparable and known source from that time. Thus, one cannot know with certainty if they had further
signicance appart from Ganassis own domain. But if they would only roughly depict his contemporary practice, we would have to conclude that today, we had rather no idea how 16th century music was
actually performed, as we nd a lot of rhythms in ve and seven divisions and melodies reminding us of the Middle East.

And this seems enough for now in this matter, for satisfying you, but I hope that in days of much convenience I

be discussed more extensively an with more intelligence.
It is sucient for me to say that . . . should be used with
prudence, that the organist, the singers and players accompanied by the ensemble should give space, one to the

should well respect with ear and expertise the place and
