Volunteer Opportunities

Outback Steakhouse. There will be a charge to

COATS FOR KIDS
Round Rock Coats for Kids will hold it’s
annual coat distribution on Saturday, November
6th at the United Heritage Center at Dell
Diamond. Doors will open at 8:00 a.m. and
remain open until the last coat is distributed
around noon. The Alumni have been asked to
assist with crowd control beginning at 7:30
a.m. when it is anticipated the line will begin
forming.
More details will be provided at our November
meeting.
A.W. GRIMES AWARD
We will be presenting the A.W. Grimes award
to a Round Rock officer at the City’s annual
Public Safety Awards Ceremony on Tuesday,
November 16th from 6:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m.
at the United Heritage Center.

2005 Express Season
The Alumni will be working 7 games again
during the 2005 Express baseball season. All
games are Saturday evening games and we will
be working exclusively in the Texadelphia
Concession stand. Three volunteers will be
needed for each of the following evenings:
April 9, April 23, May 14, May 28, June 18,
July 9 and August 13.
Information on the TABC seller certification
training will be forwarded as soon as it is
available. Certification is good for two years
so those who attended training in 2003 will
need to take the course again.
A big thanks to everyone who volunteers their
time to help with our major fundraiser.

RRPD Christmas Party

The Alumni have been invited to attend and

assist with setting up for the department’s
annual Christmas Party on Thursday, December
9th from 6:00 p.m. to midnight at the United

Introducing One of RRPD’s Finest…..
Officer Melissa Grubbs
When I was born, my parents lived
in a farm house on Gattis School Road
where the Randall’s now sits. We moved
to Austin shortly after my 1st birthday, then
back to Round Rock when I was 10.
I graduated from RRHS in 1986 and
went on to Southwest Texas State where I
spent two years as a public relations major.
After pledging a sorority and having a great
time for two years, I realized I had no idea
what I wanted to do after I finished my
degree, so I left after my second year and
went to travel school. Travel became my
career for 13 years. I am still working on
my degree and should graduate in April of
2005 with a Bachelor of Science in
Management.
I married my best friend Brian in
August of 1991 just before he shipped out
for Desert Storm. We married at 9:00 on a
Monday night and then he left for 6
months. We spent our first year at Fort
Hood where I worked in the government
travel office, then moved to Dallas for the
next 8 years.
While in Dallas, we owned a small
print shop and I worked as a travel agent.
Somewhere around 1998, he decided to go
to the police academy and left me with the
business full time. I sold it and went back
to the travel business but not before also
enrolling in the police academy.

I graduated at the top of my
academy class and was the class
Sergeant. While I was still in the academy,
I was hired by Forney PD as a reserve.
This was in 1999. Brian was hired by
Georgetown PD in February of 2000, so I
finally got to come back home to my family!
I continued to work as a reserve in Forney
as I was working for a travel agency in
Dallas that required I come to the office
once a month so I was able to put in my
reserve time at the same time I was there
for work.
I was hired with Georgetown in 2001
as a reserve officer. Due to my husband
being an officer there, I was told that I was
not eligible for a full-time position only after
one became available. I applied to Hutto
PD and was offered a reserve position in
October of 2002. While in the process for
Hutto, I put in an application for Round
Rock also. Knowing how difficult it was to
get hired here and after listening to Captain
Bratton’s “most of you won’t make it”
speech, I continued to wait for a full-time
position to open in Hutto.
But I did make it and my dream of
becoming an officer finally came true in
April of 2003. I love the department and the
people that I work with. I’m so glad that my
life has come full-circle and finally brought
me back to Round Rock. I’m sure that this
is where I was meant to be all along!

A message from our President:
Chief Debra Brown was a very enlightening speaker at out meeting in October. She focused primarily
on safety factors for women. The meeting was well attended.

Family Day at Wal Mart was a busy 6 hours but productive. We provided ID cards for over 50 kids. If
you haven't been exposed to this, it is something that began with Public Safety Day. Sr. Sgt. Pierce was
able to purchase the equipment through a grant with the City.
The parent fills out a form with pertinent family information and we take a photo of the child.
Information is printed on a small card. The child's right and left thumb prints are added to the back of
the card and is then laminated. It's a great source of information if something should happen to the
child.

As has already been reported, the Bobby Arrington Softball Tournament was a success. Over $7,000
was raised to help the Arrington family.

The Sertoma Blue Santa Casino Night was last Friday night. We won't know for a while about
proceeds that will be available to the PD. This is an annual event that kicks off the Blue Santa Program
with much needed funds.

As we get further into the month of November and the first couple weeks of December, please be alert
to some special emails in reference to needs for Blue Santa. There are going to be a lot of things to do
in a short period of time. Our regular meeting for December, will be in conjunction with a night of
wrapping gifts.

We voted at our October meeting to adopt a large Blue Santa family. We will be providing the family
with gifts and food. More details will be available at our November meeting.
