River Hill High School

how you doin?

In art...one cannot have too much patience.
—Vincent van Gogh, in a letter to his brother, Theo

Sometimes something can look beautiful just because it’s different in some way from the
other things around it.
—Andy Warhol

Create a self portrait showing foreshortening in some way. The drawing should include
½ of your body and at least one hand in the composition.

Drawing materials: Any that we have used in class or in HW experimentation.

The format must be at least 18 x 24-inches (larger if you like...include a substantial

portion of your body)

Working from observation, create a self portrait (or, alternatively, a portrait of

someone who will pose for you for a long time!!!)—head, neck, shoulders which (both)
captures a sense of the volume of the head and body, and expresses something about your
subject’s personality.
Things you might consider when setting up:
—costume/clothing
—dramatic and/or strong lighting
—gesture and expression
—proximity and/or point-of-view
Things you must consider in creating your drawing:
—use a direct light source
- work light to dark
—show your marks
—compose the entire page
—use the necessary values to describe the volumes and spaces
—do not include picky details
THUMBNAILS...at least 5 well developed sketches
due Monday/Tuesday Nov. 16th or Nov. 17th
I would like to see substantial work here!!! Plan on 6-8 hours total to
complete.
