What is it?
A tsunami is a series of giant waves
that happen after underwater
movements due to a variety of natural
events such as earthquakes, volcanic
eruptions, landslides, and meteorites.
What causes it?

Where and When
do they occur?
About every 18 years and in
the Pacific Ocean.
What are the effects?
A tsunami can destroy coastal areas
and cause nuclear accidents.
A Real-life Example:
In December 2004 a tsunami
killed more than 200,000
people in 14 countries.

What can you do to
prepare BEFORE?
You can build an emergency kit. You can make
a family communication plan. If the water
recedes from the shoreline, or goes out to sea,
in a very noticeable way, get away from the
area immediately.
What should you do to
DURING?
Listen to evacuation plans and leave the area immediately. Take any pets with
you. Move inland [away from the ocean] and towards higher ground. Stay away
from the beach. Never go down to the water to watch a tsunami come in. If you
can see the wave you are too close to escape. If the water recedes from the
shoreline or goes out to sea in a very noticeable way get away from the area
immediately. This is natures warning that a tsunami is coming.

emergency kit, and a
communication plan.
