Inaugural Rawlinson team
competes at national level
The Quiz Bowl Team from Rawlinson MS competed against 128 teams from across the
country at the national competition held earlier this month in Atlanta, Ga. a pretty
impressive feat on its own, but extraordinary since this is the rst year of existence for
the team.
The students advanced to the national competition by being ranked #1 in the city and
#9 in the state.

Students practice reading with iPods
Many of the students attending Mead ES are English Language Learners (ELLs).
Teachers Mary Krider and
Sarah Zacarias developed
a reading intervention
initiative integrated with
mobile technology to
improve student uency.
Using the Voice Memo
application on iPods,
students record their oral
reading of a familiar text.
They then listen to their
recording and teachers
provide feedback. Students
self-assess their uency
using a rubric that evaluates
accuracy, expression, rate, and punctuation. According to the teachers the students
love using this technology in the classroom, and have become more uent and
condent readers.

Retiring teachers
asked to share their
resources
This summer, NISD will welcome
hundreds of new teachers. At
the Elementary New Teacher
Academy on Aug. 5, the
Northside Education Foundation
will host a free teacher school
supply pick n pull program
called Passing the Torch.
NEF is now collecting currently
relevant, personally-owned
instructional supplies and
materials from retiring teachers,
or any teacher that would like
to donate. During the week
of June 9, you can deliver
your materials to the NISD
Warehouse at 607 Richland
Hills Dr., Suite 600, or you can
call 397-4539 or 889-0405 to
arrange for a pickup.
Charity Ball gives to
Reddix students
The Charity Ball Association
awarded The Reddix Center a
grant for almost $10,000 to
improve their Adapted Learning
Lab project for students with
severe disabilities. These
students have limited mobility,
severe cognitive delays, and
vision/hearing impairments,
and are generally unresponsive
to their environment. The
grant will be used to purchase
specialized equipment, such
as a wheelchair rocker, vibro-
acoustic mattress, and fiber-
optic strands, to provide a
sensory-rich environment that
motivates these students to
actively move and explore.
Their teachers will use the
self-initiated movement as a
foundation to develop other
skills, with the ultimate goal of
helping students reach their full
potential.
