Lesson Plan 3/19-3/20

Wednesday/Thursday

OBJECTIVE:
Students will
Determine a focus for What Do I Stand For essays through analysis of quotes, poems, and read
alouds and by writing responses to a questionnaire.

DO NOW:
1. Make sure you have all parts of homework written down and turned in.
2. Pick up the question sheet at the front of the room and write your responses at your desk seat.

2. Regroup/ Share Out (5)
- cold call students to share out a few of their responses to the three questions
3. Revisit/ Watch: Mic Check poem by Suheir Hammad (10-15)

Talking points:
- We have talked about how it can be useful to return to things we watch or read in order to
notice things we did not before.
- New insights?
- Why is she bringing attention to the fact that she is always random
- what does mike look like?
- she is talking about the fact that she is always checked, based on what she looks like and
assumptions made because of september 11th. So she also points out that maybe he should be
checked for something to - she talks about when the europeans came to settle in america - what
happened?
SO, what does she stand for?
- Is poetry a way to take a stand?

- Stop at marked points to guide students to answer this reading question
2. Transition back from lunch: sit in circle to regroup. Quickly go over the variety of things we have
observed people standing for and ideas from before lunch. Return questionnaires from last class
and transition to desk seats.
3. Students work individually writing What Do I Stand For essays and revisiting questionnaires for
guidance
4. Regroup, share some stands students are writing about and reflect on the work we are doing
(writing) with the Nas quote from earlier
- what does it mean to be wise?

HOMEWORK:
1. Read for hour x2 and complete 2 Reading Logs
2. Vocab-Writing Assignment
3. CHOOSE:
- 2 Achieve3000 Activities
- MCAS Prep Packet
