ABSTRACT: This paper discusses the teaching of genetics in high school and the importance of

using practical activities in teaching-learning process. It also describes the difficulties found by
biology teachers in carrying out these activities. The objectives of this study were: 1) assessing
the impact of practical activities in teaching learning lessons of genetics, 2) enumerate a set of
activities found in published articles and events in the biology area to be applied in the teaching
of genetics; 3) selecting five of these activities, 4) planning and executing these activities along
with high school students, and 5) assessing their impact (outcomes) in terms of teaching and
learning, enumerate also the possible difficulties in performing these activities. Next, we
analyzed data from the application of this proposal, followed by discussions related to them.
Then, we noticed an increased interest from students for the contents of Genetics and a great
interaction between them and the knowledge. It was observed that the students like the practical
approach, especially when it occurs in the laboratory. Thus, it was understood that using this
methodology can be an important resource for teaching genetics.
