Heathcliff vs Edgar Linton

In Wuthering Heights Heathcliff and Edgar Linton are both in love with Catherine,
however, they are totally different characters. First of all, Heathcliff is described as an evil dark
and violent character on the other hand, Edgar Linton is described as civilized, wealthy and a
gentleman. For example, Catherine says about Edgar Linton; I love the ground under his feet,
and the air over his head, and everything he touches, and every word he says. I love all his
looks, and all his actions, and him entirely and altogether.(Emily Bronte page 81). On the other
hand she says about Heathcliff; It would degrade me to marry Heathcliff now; so he shall never
know how i love him(Emily Bronte page 82). Therefore, Catherine marries Edgar Linton rather
than Heathcliff because Edgar is a man of high standard where as Heathcliff is the complete
opposite because of Hindley who forbid Heathcliff education and forced him to be a servant.
Furthermore, Heathcliff and Edgar Linton differ because of their love of Catherine. For instance,
Catherine and Heathcliff are inseparable but it is different with Edgar Linton Catherine mentions;
Whatever our souls are made of, his and mine are the same, and Lintons is as different as a
moonbeam from lightning, or frost from fire. (Emily Bronte 82). Catherine tells Nelly that she
loves Heathcliff so much that their souls are the same which is totally different from the way she
loves Edgar Linton. Finally, Heathcliff and Edgar Linton are complete opposites in looks which
gives away an impression of who is the bad and who is the good. For example, Heathcliff is
dark, overcast, and full of rough edges whereas Edgar is blue-eyed, fair and mild-mannered. By
describing how a character looks gives away a lot of information. In conclusion, Heathcliff and
Edgar Linton are two men who love the same woman but are the complete opposites of each
other in looks, love and in status.
