C LUBHOUSE CONFI DENTI AL
ARE WE READY ?
The possibility of Taconic owning its own club house has evoked
great interest within the membership. While optimism abounds in cer
tain quarters, pessimism in others, all seem to be approaching the
question with some degree of trepidation. There are, of course, far
reaching ramications. The most immediate answer needed is whether
or not t her e i s enough i nt er est ; I f not , case cl osed.

RUNNING AND MARRIAGE: A PIERCING SfORY
They tell me I almost caused a rift of major
proportions in the household of our beloved
Pierce Brennan. Seems in the listing of our
track championships an ominous omission was
t h a t o f p o o r P i e r c e .
Seems f urt her hi s st ory was t hat he was out
of the house on si x di fferent Wednesday eve
nings running around Yorktown track. Ques
tions Mrs. B., "Running around Yorktown?"
Accordingly he beseeches my help.
For the record, Pierce ran the 100m (14.5);
200m (30.6); 400m (68.9); 800m (2:39); the
mile (5:53); and 5K (21:14). His 1950 point
total placed him eighth among the masters.
I hope this straightens matters at home. I
would appreciate more notice next time. Any

Tom Mc earthy (21:23). Hot on his heels
was Ross Grasso (21:24) who made it all
the way up from the Bronx to take part.
Then there was Joe Handelman, nishing
24th in 21:33, but shut out of the win

COMMENT; "There's more in store for eighty-four..."
As they say in the balloon factory, "Things are popping.
In addition to the usual range of races run, I foresee much interest
i n two new events and our second attempt at another. The new events
currently on the drawing board are a one mile run a la Fifth Avenue,
and a cross country relay; the Manhattan to Mahopac road relay is the
t h i r d e v e n t .
The one mile race is being formulated by Don Ottinger and is on
the calendar tentatively for late April. It will be run down Washing
ton St., Peekskill, and will be run in conjunction with the local
Chamber of Commerce. Five year age groups are planned. The cross
country relay is scheduled for November; x 5K for men, 3 x 5K for
women. Categories will consist of Open (19-39); Masters (40 plus) and
Hi gh School ( 15- 18) .
All who ran in the road relay last year are unanimous in their ex
citement about it being the best race of the year. Plans call for the
inclusion of 20 teams - the invitations have already been mailed. Two
of the slots are reserved for TRRC. Top 16 club members to nish at
Lincoln Hall will be offered choice. Relay will be run June 24. More
d e t a i l s w i l l b e f u r n i s h e d i n n e x t n e w s l e t t e r .
St. Patrick's day races at SUNY will get us off to a great start, I
believe. From there on it' s off to the races and it certainly looks as
though 1984 is goind to be bigger and better than ever before.

Among those who were both relaxed and anxious was Carmelo Roldan; re
l axed because he was guaranteed a partner, but anxi ous because he di dn' t
k n o w wh o s h e wo u l d b e . Th e c h a n c e o f t h e d r a w wo u l d d e t e r mi n e t h e u l t i
mate victor. Carmelo knew this, as did the rest of the tense throng of
thi rtyseven runners pressed around the ofci al ' s tabl e awai ti ng pai ri ngs.
The 1983 Holiday Couple's Relay was about to commence.
The reason for the extra bit of interest with this couple's relay was
the result of a long standing idea that has been oating around for a few
years; one which Harry Neeson conceptualized and nally brought into
timely fruition, with reminders of festive holiday grab bags of our youth.
Simply put: all teams were selected by lottery. Because this has been a
traditionally male/female event, those couples who signed up together
were assured of being paired with a member of the opposite sex. Men who
showed up without a female partner took their chances; a few were paired
with females, but most wound up with one of their peers.
To offset a male/male team advantage over a mixed couple, a handicap
system was devised (the details of which are obscured and known only to
Har r y) . The cour se sel ect ed f or t hi s advent ur e was t he Bi at hl on cour se.
Those of you who have compet ed i n t he bi at hl on can at t est t o t he exci t e
ment of por t i ons of t he cour se ( par t of whi ch has been descr i bed as a
goat path). An extra bit of fun was thrown in; the gate which blocks
Lockwood Lane was left closed, making it necessary to run around or
through the thi ng. It' s a tough three mi l es.
Wendy Shile (19:07) was rst in for the opening leg; she tagged Car
melo (as usual he got lucky in the draw) and off he went sporting a pair
of track shoes. Hot on Wendy's heels came Roger Gocking who gained seven
minutes on the eld because of his handicap. The eventual winners were
Barbara Meisel and Marc Barnes. Marc ran a 17:37 making up 3:43 on Car
melo and then added 30 seconds for good measure. Roldan hung on gamely
f or second f ol l owed short l y by t he Joe Al banese/ Mi ke Gosset t t eam.
The post race celebration was held inside Sycamore Park Community Hall.
A live band provided music, the club provided refreshments. Much dancing
and f r i v ol i t y f ol l owed.

Nancy Laun Perez
by MELANIE MULVIHILL
Back of the pack runners may have noticed a pregnant woman jogging in races
during 1982. If you were thinking you hadn^t seen her much since you're right.
