Practice to Improve a Technique/Skill or phase of play? By Guy Watson and Rhys Taylor Looking at how performance analysis has an impact on coaching practice. Were using two methods of collecting data over a 20 minute period of a grass roots level football match. We will be comparing both sets of results. Discuss and argue both methods using the results collected. Produce a coaching plan based on the results. Conclude on our findings, summarise and evaluate what we did. Introduction
What is it? (English Institute of Sport, 2014:1)
Who uses it?
Performance analysis Performance Analysis Notational Analysis - is essentially a means of recording events so that there is an accurate and objective record of what actually took place
Motion Analysis is focused on raw features of an individuals activity and movement during a match without attempting any qualitative evaluation.
(Christopher Carling et al., 2007:4)
Method Notational Analysis of a 20 minute period in a grass roots level game (U15s). We are analysing KM United (Red and blacks) We will be looking at Shooting, Passing and Tackling We have 20 minute footage as well as a notational sheet recording these three skills being performed
Results Notational Analysis of the game; Passing Shooting Tackling Complete Incomplete On Target Off Target Successful Unsuccessful 23 15 2 5 4 14 61% 39% Passing Passing Complete Passing Incomplete 29% 71% Shooting Shooting On Target Shooting Off Target 22 % 78 % Tackling Tackling Successful Tackling Unsuccessful **0-0 before and after the 20 minute period** Video footage results
Human error has the potential to negatively impact on the reliability of data collected. If this data is to accurately inform analysis and training programmes, awareness of this issue, and means of addressing it, are crucial. (ODonoghue, 2007) it appears that performers at an early stage of skill learning cannot improve their performance by merely observing video footagethe coach needs to assist the learning process by drawing attention to the key elements of performance as you would do if using demonstration. (Robertson, 2002)
Results Passing Shooting Tackling Complete Incomplete On Target Off Target Successful Unsuccessful 25 (40%) 17(60%) 4(40%) 6(60%) 4(19%) 17(81%) Coaching plan - Conclusion Performance analysis is one of the key building blocks of the coaching process (Lyle, 2002)
Video feedback can only be useful if it is related to the problem addressed instead of just watching the performance and trying again. (Liebermann & Franks, 2004)
