I rst met Shake in July 2013 while president of the Association of Veterinary Informatics (AVI) during our 19th annual two-day Richard B. Talbot Informatics Symposium hosted by the 2013 American Veterinary Medical Association conference in Chicago. The Talbot Symposium is comprised of one day of in-depth foreground subdomain (clinical, public health and research informatics) presentations followed by a second day of general background presentations better oriented towards clinicians. The emphasis during this second day is on how the core components of biomedical informatics can support clinicians via clinical decision support, the use of terminologies or ontologies for semantic annotation of electronic health records for secondary uses in research or epidemiology or context-aware information retrieval for life-long learning, for example. Shakes presentation last July on the use of mobile technology oriented toward both veterinary students and faculty, house ocers and graduate veterinarians was exemplary. It was innovative (he used a well prepared dynamic presentation tool), comprehensive, current yet pragmatic, highly relevant and inspiring. I fully support Shakes participation as a continuing-education presenter at the VetGirl webinar in March 2014. Regards, Stuart Turner DVM MS President-Elect: Evidence-Based Veterinary Medicine Association (EBVMA) President-Elect: Association for Veterinary Informatics (AVI)
