Dear Parents,
I hope everyone had a great summer and is ready for a new year of history! My
name is Mr. Hurwitz and I will be teaching the World History class this year. Over the
course of the year, well be taking a look at world events starting around 1700 and going
up to the current day, focusing in particular on how regional events and inventions
influenced global events and politics. Students will be exploring this formative period of
history through a variety of projects, including one where they will stage a mock U.N.
meeting to discuss issues important in the early 20
th
century, drawing on what theyve
read and learned in class. Another project where I will have groups of students create an
entire newspaper from a specific week in history, hundreds of years ago. Students will
also do a project where they will take a historical lesson theyve learned and connect it to
an issue in the city or in the community, in which they think they can make a difference.
The goal of the class, besides teaching students about major events in World History, like
World War I, or the Civil Rights Movement, is to get students to think about how history
has affected their own lives, and how they can shape the historical narrative going
forward into the future. Below is an overview of classroom expectations for the coming
year:

HOMEWORK
In general, students will be given homework 1-2 times a week, with a due date the next
day. Although these daily assignments may seem unimportant, they are designed to
prepare students for upcoming lessons, review and reinforce content already covered, and
build study skills, reading skills, and writing skills. It is therefore important that students
turn in all assignments, and turn them in ON TIME. Late work will not be accepted after
the first two months of the semester. In addition to homework, there will usually be one
larger project per unit. These projects will ask students to demonstrate their
understanding of the units in creative and fun ways that are still academically rigorous.
As with the daily assignments, it is important for students to take these projects seriously,
complete the assignments on time, and, if working in a group, collaborate with other team
members. After the first project, where students will still be getting used to class
expectations, late work will not be accepted.

BEHAVIOR
The classroom is a safe and inclusive space, and students are expected to act in a way that
respect the physical, mental, and emotional well being of their fellow students. There is a
zero tolerance policy in my class for bullying and offensive language. All students
deserve to have a learning environment where they feel welcome, safe, and included.

ATTENDANCE
Students are expected to be in class every day when the bell rings. If a student is forced to
be absent, it is the responsibility of the student to make sure they get make up work to
cover any tests or projects they will miss in advance, or meet with me to get the
worksheets they missed when they get back for sudden absences and sick days. Being in
class is important for students to fully learn and engage with the content, and participate
in good classroom discussions. This learning can only occur if everyone comes to class.
While frequent or unexplained absences will not be penalized in and of itself, make up
work will not be given except with a written note from home if a student is chronically
late. Frequent absences hurt not only your own learning, but the learning of the rest of the
class.

NOTE: If you have a family emergency or extraordinary circumstances arise that will
impact a students ability to turn in homework, their behavior, or their attendance long
term, please contact me as soon as possible, so we can meet and discuss steps that we can
take together to ensure that your student can be as successful as possible over the course
of the year.

I know that the cost of supplies can add up quickly, and I will make every effort to let
students to use classroom resources when possible, but there are still some supplies that
are need for this class. If the student will be unable to come to class with these supplies
for any reason, please contact me so we can discuss ways that your student will be able to
get access to the tools he needs to be successful in this class.

Espero que todos hayan tenido un gran verano y est listo para un nuevo ao de la
historia ! Mi nombre es Sr. Hurwitz y me va a ensear la clase de Historia del Mundo de
este ao . En el transcurso del ao, vamos a echar un vistazo a los acontecimientos del
mundo a partir de alrededor 1700 y va hasta el da actual , centrndose en particular en
cmo los acontecimientos y las invenciones influido los acontecimientos mundiales y la
poltica regional. Los estudiantes explorarn este perodo de formacin de la historia a

TAREA
En general, los estudiantes se les dar la tarea 1-2 veces a la semana , con una fecha de
