MEDIASTATEMENT
Carbontaxrepealtofillconcessiongap
THEremovalofthecarbontaxwillmorethancompensateforthereductioninthefederalgovernments
shareoffundingforpensionerconcessionsonelectricitybills.
TheStateGovernmentwasresponsibleforfundingthebulkoftheconcessionandIhavereceived
correspondencefromasenioradvisortotheQueenslandTreasurershowingtheFederalGovernment
portionofthepensionerconcessionwasonly15%.However,anindependentanalysisoftheconcession
fundingbytheAustralianInstituteofHealthandWelfaresettheFederalShareataround10%.
AQueenslandGovernmentadvisorhasproventhatFederalcontributionsmadeupnomorethan15per
centoftheconcession.Therebateforelectricityisabout$282.54soifwetakethe15%figure,theFederal
contributionwaslessthan$43peryear.AccordingtotheQueenslandGovernment,7%ofanaverage
electricitybillcomesfromthecarbontax*,whichequatesto$98.50ayear(onanaverageannualpower
billof$1407**).Thisrepresentsanetsavingof$55.50oneachhouseholdpowerbill,althoughthatsaving
riskserosionbytheconstantelectricitypricehikesproposedbytheQueenslandCompetitionAuthority.
TheLiberalNationalGovernmentiscommittedtorepealingthecarbontaxtoeasethecostoflivingfor
pensionersandforallQueenslandfamilies.
QueenslandfaredwellfromthefirstAbbottGovernmentbudget,receivinganextra$3.2billioninfunding
overthefouryearsto201617,whichismoneyQueenslanddidnotexpecttoreceivepreviously.
NextfinancialyearQueenslandwillreceivemorethan$21.5billioninfundingfromtheCommonwealtha
realincreaseof5.5%fromthisfinancialyear.Oncomingtooffice,theAbbottGovernmentreinstated
nearly$800millionofschoolfundingthatBillShortensecretlyrippedawayfromQueenslandinthedying
daysoftheLaborGovernment.
Wearemakingarecord$13.4billioninvestmenttobuildtheinfrastructureofthe21
st
Centuryfor
Queensland,including$6.7billionfortheBruceHighway.
RepealingthecarbontaxwillsavetheQueenslandGovernmentaround$150millionnextyearalone.
