Task 1
Research
I need to look on the internet at the sites for the show to see how they are promoted. I will watch some of the programmes as I can buy some episodes of Geordie Shore from iTunes and I can watch Made in Chelsea on 4OD.
I will ask people who are in the target audiences if they watch the programmes, what they like about them and what they do not like. To do this I will hand out a questionnaire asking the following questions:
Do you watch Made in Chelsea? What do you like about it? What do you not like about it? How did you first hear about the show?
Do you watch Geordie Shore? What do you like about it? What do you not like about it? How did you first hear about the show?
Non-Scripted Programmes
A scripted programme has a story and a dialogue written in advance by the writers and then it is learnt by the actors that are in the programme. In an unscripted show the actors are given a story and can say what they like.
Some people believe that these programmes are actually scripted and that scenes are re-shot in order to get what the director wants.
One of the big problems for the programme makers is to control what is said and done as these shows have to be careful about not being too rude or offensive to people. Some parts are re-edited if the producers think there will be problems.
In the UK, shows are governed by the OFCOM Broadcasting Code. It gives the rules for things like: broadcasting to under 18s; harm and offence; crime; religion; fairness and privacy. I do a radio programme with my dad and we are governed by these rules. Each TV station also has a code of practice. If they break the code of practice they can be fined. As well they do not want to offend the audience as they will stop watching, or companies who advertise on the station and during the programme will stop using that company to advertise. This will mean that the broadcasting company will loose money.
In 2013, TV stations that you pay for tightened the rules on reality programmes so that they meet the standards expected by the viewing public.
In an interview the producer of Jersey Shore said:
Government norms prevent us from showing anything which might scandalize people too much. It tends to be our inside joke that if we could show all the things that happen, our ratings would hit the roof, but wed get arrested.
We censor people getting a little too cosy, to scenarios where too much is exposed, to fights which went too far if I told you more Id have to kill you.
Similar Shows:
Jersey Shore
Jersey Shore was the first of MTVs non-scripted reality shows. It started in 2009 and ran until 2012. There were six series based on the lives of eight housemates spending their summer at the Jersey shore. The show broke viewer ratings for MTV with audiences up to 8.7m. Geordie Shore is a spin off from this.
The show was based in a house in Seaside Heights in New Jersey. All the furniture and props were put in by MTV There were 35 fixed cameras in the house along with 12 handheld ones. Later series moved to Florida and Italy.
The show was heavily advertised on MTV and then in magazines that appealed to the target audience. Once the show was going, characters started to appear in talk-shows.
The target audience was between 18 -28 and was focused on Standard Occupational Classification Group C2DE.
The aim of the show was to make people think that this was real life, it showed the problems people have and what they wish for. They did what everybody else wanted to do and say.
There was lots of complaints about the show, it was thought that the show showed American- Italians in a bad light and some people even said it was racist. The Governor of New Jersey said the programme was a fake as the people in it were not from New Jersey and it showed the area in a bad light.
The Valleys
The Valleys is an MTV spin off from Jersey Shore. It follows youngsters from the South Wales Valleys as they move to Cardiff to live out their dreams. The average audience is over 500,000 per episode.
The target audience for this show is 18 -28 and is aimed at Standard Occupational Classification Group C2DE which is very similar to Jersey Shore.
These MTV shows are designed to appeal to the stations audience of 16 -30. They are loud and feature good looking people who like drinking, sex and good things.
Geordie Shore
The start of every episode of Geordie Shore introduces the characters featured in the show. The show is a non- scripted series. In each episode, characters talk about whats happening in their everyday lives as Geordies from Newcastle. During the show they shout at each other and sometimes they have fights and often use bad language. The show is about a real life bunch of friends and how they live their lives daily. It makes the lives of the characters in Made in Chelsea look more surreal, as they have lots of money, whilst the Geordies struggle. All the characters in the show are local people from Newcastle and the characters are not posh, they wear normal clothes that can be bought on the high street is places such as Next, Top Shop or Primark. Actually I think it takes fun of people in Newcastle which makes them a laughing stock across England and makes the rest of the England think people from Newcastle are all like the people in the show. However theyre not all like that probably.
Target Audience- Probably the same as the characters between 16 and 25. This age group can identify the characters and with the problems and issues shown in the programme. Standard Occupational Classification Group they are appealing to is C2DE but I think they will also want to attract higher classifications who watch it because they like to be shocked.
The Spectator magazine said this about the show: the show follows a dozen drunken louts through their various escapades and love affairs on Tyneside. The cameras go everywhere, and the cast, who simply play themselves, bare everything from their bottoms to their souls. The format works; the stars of Geordie Shore are not trying to be somebody else. They do not need to act. The entertainment there is that they are not pretending.
Made in Chelsea
This is a programme about friends who live in a very rich part of London. It concentrates on the relationships between girls and boys. Their lifestyle is determined by the area they live in; the money they have, and the expensive clothes they wear and cars they drive. Made in Chelsea makes it feel that its another world compared to the characters and life shown in Geordie Shore. The characters in Made in Chelsea are made to look cleverer than the characters in Geordie Shore; they are well spoken and this seems to mean they are better educated. The show does illustrate the same problems as in Geordie Shore; for example the arguing between them about relationships. Like Geordie Shore, the target audience is similar around 18- 28. Females make up the majority of Made in Chelseas audience according to a study from yougov based on the relationship between social media and television. Social media has helped the show to flourish and has made approaching advertisers and sponsors that much easier, getting the characters to use their products and so to advertise them to the audience.
Target Audience- Probably the same as the characters between 18 and 28. This age group can identify the characters and with the problems and issues shown in the programme. Standard Occupational Classification Group they are appealing to is ABC1. However they also want to appeal to the C2DE audience by trying to attract them in to watching how the other half live.
Questionnaire
Focus Group with a Target Audience [Standard Occupational Classification (AB)] I asked a number of my sisters friends what they thought of Made in Chelsea and why they watched it. The Group was made up of 8 public school girls aged between 15 16. They answered:
It looks like real life. We want to be like them. They talk about the same things we do boys. We like it because there is a chance we could meet them in real life on a street in London. They wear nice clothes and have nice things. It is addictive. Friends told me about it and so the adverts.
I asked them about Geordie Shore
They did not like it as the characters were not like them. They had no friends like them It was rude and disgusting. Friends told them about it. Watched it to see if it was as bad as they said.
Mad in Chelsea was much better.
Focus Group with a Target Audience [Standard Occupational Classification (C1C2DE)] I asked some of my fathers staff to answer the questionnaire. Ten answered and the results were:
They watched Made in Chelsea because they like to see how rich people live and that even they have problems. The first heard about made in Chelsea from TV commercials. Most of them also watched Geordie Shore. They liked how crazy the people were when they were drunk but they did not like it when they went too far when they are drunk. Again they heard about it from TV commercials.
Advertising for these two shows
Both of these shows are advertised on their channels E4 and MTV respectively; MTV is Geordie Shore, E4 is Made in Chelsea.
They also advertise in magazines, and on websites. Made in Chelsea has also had an article in the Daily Telegraph and had a feature on Radio 4 News.
A made in Chelsea perfume advert
A Made in Chelsea promotional photo in the Daily Telegraph. (Readers are ABC1 classification)
There is also a Made in Chelsea Twitter page.
The fashion retailer Boohoo has partnership with E4 to introduce its adverts into the Made in Chelsea app.
Fashion brands are keen to promote their products on made in Chelsea as they hope that the audience will want to copy the people on the show and have what they have. The creators believe that the target audience can afford to buy these things. People play a game called Spot the product placement in Made in Chelsea.
An advert from Shout Magazine for Geordie Shore. (Readers are C2DE classification)
From a billboard in Magaluf, Spain
The Geordie Shore characters feature some of the following brands; Adidas; Converse; DR Denim; Ray Ban; Gant; Canada Goose and Cheap Monday. If you look on-line you can see loads of posts of people asking what the people in the programme wear because they want to copy them. The people in the show also get money for endorsing products.
Building the Product
The Made in Chelsea programme makers want to show luxury and high living. They have chosen locations for filming like: West London areas of Belgravia, Kings Road, and Knightsbridge as well as occasionally they travel to other locations such as Dubai, Finland, Marrakech, Paris, Cannes, Chamonix, Verbier, Amsterdam, Saint-Tropez, Barcelona, South Africa, Venice, and New York. All places rich people go to. They wear designer labelled clothes and talk about very expensive cars. The music in the show is all trendy artists like; Frank Turner, Bid Deal, Monarchy; Womans Hour; Layla and Tom Odell. The music is described as Indie Pop.
The Geordie Shore programme makers want to show what working class life is like. They choose a depressed area in the North of England; with special shows in Magaluf and Cancun in Mexico places the target audience go to on holiday. The cast also visit Amsterdam, Barcelona and Prague. These are places that young people who the show wants to appeal to visit for hen parties or stag nights. The music on the show has artists like: Cheryl Cole; Daft Punk; David Guetta; lmfao and the Wanted. All music the target audience would hear in the clubs they go to.
How do these shows attract and then keep the target audience?
These shows are based upon the relationships between the different characters. Do they like each other; what are the arguments about; what opinions do they have; how do they behave. All this means that there is variety; each show is different and so it is hoped the audience does not get bored. The Producers also try and create situations where the people in the show will act in a certain way and so make the show more exciting. They also encourage magazines and newspapers to run stories about the characters outside of what happens on the show. In this way they hope that he characters will build up a following and that the audience will ever love them or hate them but will watch the show to find out what is happening. Most people like gossip and this helps keep audiences. In some cases I think that the producers actually script some shows in order to get a reaction from the audience in order to keep them interested.
www.reveal.co.uk - Geordie Shore is known to cause controversy and now the show has sparked new outrage after one cast member was filmed jumping off a balcony into a swimming pool below. This is an example of the characters provoking a reaction from the audience.
www. glipho.com - If the current season of Geordie Shore hadn't created controversy enough, it seems season seven that was recently filmed up in Newcastle has got a number of fans asking several questions. A month back, cast member Sophie was suspended from filming after being overheard using a racial slur. This Monday, MTV then announced a new face that would be entering the famous house. Marnie Simpson will be joining the gang for the seventh season and is none other than Sophie's younger cousin. Her entrance will be a surprise to the cast and the network tell fans that it isn't long until Gaz and Scotty T start vying for her attention- do we see another fight looming? The 20 year-old is from South Shields and a former contender for the title for Miss Newcastle. When talking to MTV she proclaimed:
I think the girls will find it hard not to like me, but I know they will think Im prettier than them. I dont give in to guys easily, so the boys will have a chase on their hands.
She also promised that she would bring more drama to the show. Sophie took to Instagram to tell the fans not to worry about her cousin becoming her replacement, saying that she will be present in the seventh season as it has already completed filming

Trowvegas
Genre
Trowvegas will be a structured reality programme like Made in Chelsea. It will be about a group of 16 year olds at a private school called Trowvegas in the West Country. It will follow the day to day lives of nine characters at the school. It will also cover their trips to Barbados and to Saint Tropez.
Party Time
Posh party!!
School Ball
Shopping!!
Fun and Games James Bond with his girls!!!
The programme will be based around the day to day lives of the children at the school the problems they have with each other; the fun they have and how they spent their free time.
I want to show that they are just like ordinary kids; they worry about exams; about what people think of them; they worry about relationships. They have fun, they like going to parties, they like good things.
I want to show the local area as well. They can visit and shop in Bath. Visit Stonehenge and Salisbury. They can go to the Glastonbury Festival and other concerts in the area. They can go on a day trip to places like Bournemouth. We will see them going to London to shop and a school trip to Barbados. They will visit a friends house in San Tropez in the summer.
Characters
I want the audience to like them. I want some people to identify with them and others to be curious about them; maybe to ask what it is like to be well off and at a private school.
Katy she is the main character. She is very popular and gets on with everybody. She spends a lot of time solving other peoples problems. Henry funny, daft, forgetful (comedy could come from this) Hattie fun, artistic and eccentric - Tilly glamorous and dramatic. Lucy crazy, hot headed, attention seeking. Dasha - Sporty and very competitive. Alex wealthy and fun George N/A
Constraints
The people in the show are 16 so I cannot show them drinking alcohol in pubs and will have to be careful of bad language. There should be no rude shots. People who dont go to a private school might not watch the show or not. Some of the audience might want to be like the characters from the show. Some the shows audience will like the show or not like it. Some of the audience might not like the characters that much. The show might have mixed reviews from people.
