drawing on several sources and generating additional related, focused questions that allow for
multiple avenues of exploration.
CCSS.ELA-Literacy.W.8.8
Gather relevant information from multiple print and digital sources, using search terms
effectively; assess the credibility and accuracy of each source; and quote or paraphrase the data
and conclusions of others while avoiding plagiarism and following a standard format for citation.
CCSS.ELA-Literacy.W.8.9
Draw evidence from literary or informational texts to support analysis, reflection, and research.
Learning Target: I can use any means to show the five components that led up to the Civil War.
Suggested avenues include: Mind map, trifold, poster, power point, or video.
The Five Components MUST be Included:
1. Economic and social differences between the North and the South.
2. States versus federal rights.
3. The fight between Slave and Non-Slave State Proponents.
4. Growth of the Abolition Movement.
5. The election of Abraham Lincoln.

Assessment: Grade will be based on presentation, facts, creativity, and understanding of the five
components.
Prior Knowledge: Facts discussed in class in detail of the five components leading up to the
civil War. This will be done with the use of videos and text. We will split off into five groups
and each will explain in detail one of the components and share with the class.
2

New Ideas: Government will be largely explored as to the Civil War outbreak. Economics will
also play a factor as well as history.
HOT Question: What if the South did not believe that Lincoln was pro-slavery? Would he still
be voted in as President? Explain why or why not.
Differentiation: Each student is able to choose how they want to present the five components.
For lower-level students, a poster or mind-map will be suggested. For above-level students, a
trifold, power point or video will be suggested.
