Lesson Topic: Finding the mean Class level: Fifth grade



Content
- Find the mean of a group of numbers

Objectives
- The students will be able to find the mean of a group of numbers using counters.
- The students will be able to find the mean of a group of numbers without using counters.

Materials
- Math book, copybook, pencil, board, markers, counters.
Procedures
Focus event
- The session will start by stating what is going to be done throughout the session (Objectives)
- Then an activity will be done to explain the lesson

The activity:
Each four students will make a group together. Each group will have a number of counters.
Steps for finding the mean will be stated on the board.
Steps are:
- Show each number with a row of counters
- Rearrange counters to have the same number in each row
- The number in each row is the mean
Then after the students implemented these steps, each group is going to assume the way they
calculate the mean if they werent supported by counters or the number was very big that
couldnt be represented by counters.
The way will be:
- Find the sum of the numbers
- Count the addends
- Divide the sum by the addends
Presenting Content
- Then after finishing the activity the way students have discovered will be restated so that I
will make sure that all students understood it. And after that students will solve exercises
from the book pages 65 and 66. Where two exercises will be done with the teacher and the
others will be done individually so that the teacher will assess students understanding.

Providing practice
Other examples will be solved with all the students, by solving Average Word Problems sheet.

Evaluation
- The evaluation process will be through the whole session as the teacher is prompting
questions to each student. In addition, the classwork will be corrected individually to check
the understanding of each student.
