Road Trip for Readers Report

Number 7
We were up early the next morning to catch an 8 a.m.
ferry from Port Angeles to Vancouver Island and
Victoria, the capital of British Colombia. Our frst day
on the island was devoted to Nancys planned highlight
of the trip -- a self-guided tour of world famous
Butchard Gardens in suburban Victoria. The site is a
mined out quarry that was used by the Butchard family
as a source of material for its Portland cement business.
The wife of the business founder fulflled her dream
of transforming the quarry into a showplace for trees,
plants and fowers collected while on vacations around
the world. Now more than 100 years later, its a dazzling
display of fora and fauna. The sunken garden and foun-
tain in the right column are located in what formerly
was the bottom of the quarry. There were so many gar-
dens ablaze with blossums that the mind boggled, so I
didnt take pictures of them because we were so focused
ideas for plants, bushes and trees to plant at home. The
bottom picture was taken from the restaurant patio
where we had dinner overlooking a portion of Victoria
Harbor.
