TASK

Goals:

Goal #1: Teachers will examine the CCCSSM (for grades 7-9)
and determine the standards that encourage critical thinking
and ask for students to utilize math in real world context.

Goal #2: Teachers of all subjects will begin collaborating
mathematics with concepts of other fields of study.

Goal #3: Teachers who mostly teach mathematics will practice
examples of incorporating topics and concepts outside their
primary subject of study.

Goal #4: Teachers whose primary teaching focus is not
mathematics will practice utilizing mathematical topics in non-
traditional mathematic settings (such as in a history, science or
language course).

Goal #5: Teachers of all subjects will begin brainstorming how
they can embed cross-curricular topics into their lesson
designs.

Goal #1: Teachers will examine the CCCSSM (for grades 7-9) and
determine the standards that encourage critical thinking and
ask for students to utilize math in real world context.
Identifying standards that ask for real world
applications (Using attachment #1)
Making connections with ELA and math standards

Incorporating other subjects in a mathematics classroom
Goal #2: Teachers of all subjects will begin collaborating
mathematics with concepts of other fields of study.
Goal #3: Teachers who mostly teach mathematics will practice
examples of incorporating topics and concepts outside their
primary subject of study.
Looking at curriculum units
o Overland Trails
Using concepts of western expansion
found in 8
th
grade US History curriculum
to teach equations, tables, and graphs.
This is a unit that can be collaborated
with a social science teacher.

o The Pit and the Pendulum
Story by Edgar Allen Poe with the same
name, The Pit and the Pendulum is a
mathematic unit which students solve the
question on whether the prisoner from
the story would have enough time to
escape while tied down to a pendulum.
This unit also allows for students to
construct a pendulum to test their theory.
This is a unit that can be collaborated
with an ELA and Science teacher.

LUNCH

Using Mathematics in non-designated math classrooms
Goal #2
Goal #4: Teachers whose primary teaching focus is not
mathematics will practice utilizing mathematical topics in non-
traditional mathematic settings (such as in a history, science or
language course).
Utilizing Statistics and math concepts in a history
classroom.
o Students in 7
th
and 9
th
grade can use statistics
from the CIA Factbook when learning about
countries and regions around the world
Students can use class computers to look
up data on countries of study(teacher can
make class sets by printing out data if
computers are not available)
Students collect the data (see Attachment
#4 and #5) and answer questions that ask
students to make sense of data. These
thought provoking questions will allow
for a thoughtful discussion when
comparing the living conditions of
different regions of the world.
o Students in 8
th
grade can utilize US Census data
to display populations and make comparisons
from different time periods.
Similar to the 7
th
and 9
th
grade lesson
looking at world data, 8
th
grade history
focuses on United States History. Instead
of the CIA Factbook, one can use US
Census data to compare regions with each
other, compare through different time
periods, look at change in demographics,
etc. NOTE: Census in USA began in 1790.

Goal #2
Goal #5: Teachers of all subjects will begin brainstorming how
they can embed cross-curricular topics into their lesson designs.

Using Attachment #6, teachers can begin making a
brainstorm of ideas on how they can incorporate math
and other subjects (teachers will be grouped by subject
matter to allow for discussion)
Come as a full class and share cross-curricular ideas and
concepts.
