Number and Algebra
Number and Place Value
Represent numbers using mental strategy or counter for material
support.
Teacher Observation
Students playing the board game
Students Background Knowledge What is your starting point what do the students already know, what have they done before, how does this connect to or build on their existing
knowledge?
Students have spent this week learning about algebra. They will be applying this knowledge to their activity today.
Resources and Materials What materials and resources will you need to have prepared?
Board Game template, Part-whole cards, dice, counters.
Student Teacher Focus What will you concentrate on yourself eg; classroom management, lesson flow, voice, positioning, engagement etc?
My focus for this lesson is on engagement ensuring students are engaged with the task.
Stage of lesson Tasks Time Student action
What will students be
doing? Explain how the
students are expected to
work.
Teacher action
What will you do during this time? What prompting questions
may you need to prepare? How will you monitor student
progress and needs?
What preparations have you made for early finishers so that
they will be extended in a relevant and interesting way?
Stage 1 Introduction
How will you engage and
stimulate the interest of the
students?
Include possible
questions that
you may choose
to use
Demonstrations etc
REVISIT
Have a class discussion on what students have
learnt this week in maths.

5 mins

Sit as group on floor
and respond to
questions after
acknowledgement of
hand up.
The teacher may ask:

What are some things we have learnt in maths
this week?
What does equalling both sides mean?

Stage 2 Body of lesson
Describe each distinct
task in the order to be
undertaken. Start a new
task each time the
teacher or students
behave in a different
manner. State an
estimated length of time
for each task.
Ensure that there is
some form of prompt or
reinforcement available
for students
What preparations have
you made for early
finishers of each task so
that they will be
extended in a relevant
and interesting way?
DEMONSTRATE
The teacher will demonstrate to the class how
to play the board game.
There is one board game per pair.
They use a dice to have a roll.
They must answer the part/part/whole card
correctly in order to have a turn in rolling the
dice and move according to how many squares
the dice states.
If they get it wrong, they lost a turn.
The person to reach the end of the board game
wins.
If they finish early, they can play again.

20 mins
Students are
watching and
listening to the
instructions of the
teacher.

The teacher will put the board game template up
on the board and demonstrate the game.
If students have any questions, the teacher will
use this time to answer them.

The part/part/whole will be written up on the board
in order for students to understand how to answer
the question.
GAME BOARD TASK
Students will go off to the tables or on the floor
and play the game.

20 mins

Students are
focusing on their
own game and not
being distracted by
anything else.

The teacher will roam around and ensure that the
students stay on task. Assistance will be given to
those who need it, but the answer will not be
given away. If a student finds the concept too
hand, they will be swapped down a leve.
Stage 3: Conclusion
How will you draw the
findings of the lesson
together so that the
students can evaluate
what they have learnt?
REFLECTION TIME
Students will will be something they have
learnt from this weeks lesson and why.

10 mins
Students to be
sitting in a circle with
teacher included.
One student sharing
their reflection at a
time.
Teacher to prompt the students that struggle to
explain by further prompting.
Why did you like doing that?
How has this helped you with algebra?
Stage 5: Closure
Do you need to prepare
the students for handing
over to another teacher,
or another subject

PACK UP TIME
Pack everything away, and get ready for end of
day.
Students will be
putting their work in
their tubs and
getting any notices
and clipboards and
readers back.
Thank the students for participating in class! :)
