RATIO and PROPORTION





RATIO
Ratio is the way of comparing two numbers by
division.
Suppose Ranjan got 80 marks and rohit got
60marks in maths,we can say that
Ranjans marks/rohits marks=80/60=4/3



Ratio in simplest form or lowest terms

A ratio is said to be in its simplest form or
lowest terms do not have a common factor
except 1.
For example: the simplest form of 70:40 is 7:4.
Comparison of ratios
Since a ratio is a fraction , so two ratios can be
compared by applying the method of
comparing two fractions.
For examples:
4/7>3/7 so 4:7>3:7
Example of ratio
Kannu bought 5 kg potatoes and vineet
bought 3 kg 500g. Find the ratio of kannus
and vineets potatoes.
Solution:- kannus potatoes:5 kg=5000g
Vineets potatoes:3kg500g=3500g
Kannus potatoes/vineets
potatoes=5000/3500=10/7
Required ratio=10:7
PROPORTION
We have learnt in the previous class that a
proportion is a statement that shows two
ratios are equal.
In general , if a:b=c:d then we say that a,b,c,d
are in proportion. A and D are called extreme
terms.,B and c called middle terms and D is
called fourth proportional to a,b,c.
CONDITIO FOR PROPORTIONALITY
If a,b,c,d are in proportion, then
a/b=c/d = ad=bc
In a proportion the product of the extreme
terms is equal to the product of the means.
CONTINUED PROPORTION
If three quanties a,b,c are such that a:b=b:c,
then a,b,c are said to be in continued
proportion.
The quantity in the middle , b is said to be
mean proportion between a and c.
The third quantity c is called proportional to a
and b.
Examples of proportion
Find the mean proportion between 2 and 8.
Solution:
Let x be the mean proportion between 2 and 8.
So 2,x,x,8 are in proportion
Or 2:x::x:8
Or x*x=2*8
Or x2=16=4*4
X=4
Hence mean proportion between 2 and 8 is 4
