Homework in 2

nd
Grade

As stated in the Parent/Student Handbook, The purpose of homework is
to help children develop responsibility, organization skills, and the self-
discipline necessary for independent study.

At the beginning of second grade, comfort, success and responsibility are the
primary goals of homework. The assignments may include review of previously
learned concepts and extra practice that class time does not allow.
The children are expected to complete 15 to 20 minutes of homework four
times a week. For the most part, daily homework will include two
assignments as well as nightly reading. As the year progresses, homework
expectations will increase. We will communicate these changes as they come
into effect.

Children are given time each day to record their assignment on their
homework assignment sheet (copy attached), and to ask questions so they
understand what is expected.

Homework should be done by the child without parental supervision.
The parental role should be to help the child develop a homework
structure:

! Create a homework routine
! Allot appropriate time for assignments
! Establish a quiet place to work
! Develop independence (i.e. return completed homework to school)

If your child has difficulty with any aspect of homework, please encourage
them to speak to their teacher. Please do not hesitate to contact your
teacher via note or email if you have any questions or concerns.
