VOCABULARY: SCULPTURE
additive method: building up a material such as clay to create a final sculpture
asymmetrical: not the same on both sides
carving: cutting away; in sculpture, cutting away at stone or wood to reveal the form.
Carving is a subtractive method of sculpture.
casting: pouring a liquid material into a shaped container called a mold and allowing it
to harden in the shape of the mold; bronze is a commonly cast material
concave: curving inward
convex: curving outward
flat plane: a two-dimensional surface
focal point: the center of attention in a work of art
low-relief: a sculpture with slightly raised images on a flat background
maquette: a small-scale model for a larger sculpture
modeling: building up and shaping a soft material like clay or wax to create a sculpture;
Modeling is an additive method of sculpture.
mold: a reversed form into which a sculpture is cast
monumental: much larger than life-size
negative space: the area between objects or the parts of an object
positive space: the area occupied by the subject of the artwork
public art: art on display in a public space, such as a park
realistic: representing the physical world as it actually is without distortion
simplify: to reduce to only the most essential elements
subtractive method: removing parts of a material to create the final form
symmetrical: the same on both sides
