Just look at the results. For the first time ever, the Liberals have more diversity
in their caucus including a record three black MPPs elected at the same time in
Michael Coteau, Mitzie Hunter and Granville Anderson. This was no accident
as diversity has been a big mojo for this Premier....Read more page 19

Hey Look - RASSELAS

IS BACK!

Rasselas is an Ethiopian-born music

artist who is emerging out of Canada. He
currently resides in Toronto where he
recently released his new album Injera
Music now in stores and iTunes. His
style is mainly composed of Hip-Hop
music mixed with traditional Ethiopian
music. He performs in English and
Amharic, and soon will make his
French performing debut. He merges
his linguistic abilities to create a fresh
vibe within Hip-Hop music. He has
good knowledge of the international
marketplace, and is quite at home in the
recording studio producing, composing
beats, and rapping original lyrics.

Fake prosecutor Tewodros Beharu is no exception.
He willingly and passionately played a key role in
sending Eskinder Nega, Andualem Aragie, Reeyot
Alemu, Nathnael Mekonnen, Bekele Gerba, Olbana
Lelisa, the Muslim leaders and so many political
prisoners to the hellish TPLF jails. This unjust man
is now living in Silver Spring, Maryland. While his
victims are suffering in harsh jails, he appears to go
to bed without any remorse and regrets.

2006/2014

At the 2014 FIFA World Cup,
from 12 June to 13 July, Africa's teams hope
to produce better results than at the 2010
tournament in South Africa. Ghana, Algeria,
Cte d'Ivoire, Nigeria and Cameroon represent
the continent this year, but which of them will
make it past the first round?

African teams bring life to an event
that, in recent times, has appeared to be losing
some of its gloss. Who can forget the youthful
exuberance of the 38-year-old Roger Milla in
1990 celebrating each goal by dancing at the
corner flag and wriggling his waist with a

delighted grin on his face?

Can any of the African representatives
in Brazil reignite such passions again? Ghana,
Nigeria, Cte d'Ivoire, Cameroon and Algeria
the same countries that represented Africa
in the 2010 World Cup are again the flag
bearers against the best teams in the world. This
emphasises the dominance of the Western and
North African teams, which has continued for
the past three decades.
Four years ago, only Ghana's Black Stars made
it beyond the first round, reaching the quarterfinal, and the going is expected to be even

tougher in Brazil. Their prospects of success

depend on rigorous preparation and avoiding
the internal wrangles over allowances and
maladministration that often undermine teams
at major tournaments.
Cte d'Ivoire
Yaya Tour has emerged as the most successful
African player in recent times, winning the
Confederation of African Football's African
Footballer of the Year from 2011 to 2013. His
imposing performances for Manchester City
have taken the underachieving club to the
summit of English football. Now that he is at the

Hey Look - RASSELAS IS BACK!

By Samuel Getachew
For Ethiopians in Toronto and
beyond, Rasselas is as well-known as
any popular figure. He has performed
in many leading Ethiopian festivals
including the annual Ethiopian New
Years celebrations in September
on Christie, been a fixture at the
infamous now closed Cottage night
club and been a role model for many.
Then, in 2010, he decided to leave the
music scene.
In an interview with TZTA four years
ago, he reflected with me how he
was constructing a new album due
for commercial release early 2010
and that during the recording of
the project, I went through several
changes in my continuous search for
Truth, the meaning of "Life" and true
happiness.

His is an album of collaboration

with great artists such as Bezuyehu
Demissie and Ermias Assebwork.
From paying tribute to farmers, to
celebrating cultural diversity and
simply using rap to preach, the album
is something else. Venturing in a new
territory that is most unknown to the
ear of an Ethiopian audience that is
too traditional, Rasselas confidently
delivers his signature.
His sound is a self-described
odyssey of a mainly composed HipHop music mixed with traditional
Ethiopian music. For instance, his
song, Abesha Party, is a beautiful
number with a mixture of youthful
energy. In Ride, he celebrates popular
Ethiopian hangouts, including the
beautiful popular Ethiopian Randez
Vous restaurant and Cottage night
club where he found his footing a
decade ago.
Sure, some of the songs like Doro
Wot, are Weird Al" Yankovic silly.
His lyrics for this song seems like
they were written at the back of a used
napkin. However, almost all of the
songs on the album are enjoyable. It is
still an album that is worth having. It
celebrates diversity, persistence in an
array of musical arrangements, style
and languages.

That true happiness included becoming

a father to beautiful children. This
past weekend, in a Facebook posting
marking Fathers day, celebrated his
role as the ultimate blessing. That is
a beautiful role to have and no wonder
he has managed to produce a beautiful
album Injera Music -, now available
on iTunes, of diverse music that was
recently celebrated at a downtown
bash few weeks back.

Here is a short bio. of Rasselas

Rasselas is an Ethiopianborn music artist who is emerging
out of Canada. He currently resides
in Toronto where he recently released
his new album Injera Music now in
stores and iTunes. His style is mainly
composed of Hip-Hop music mixed
with traditional Ethiopian music. He
performs in English and Amharic, and
soon will make his French performing
debut. He merges his linguistic abilities
to create a fresh vibe within Hip-Hop
music. He has good knowledge of
the international marketplace, and is
quite at home in the recording studio
producing, composing beats, and
rapping original lyrics.

Time and again Rasselas has

proven that any show he appears on

is guaranteed to rock. His presence
and charisma capture audiences and
ignite immediate desires to purchase
his albums. He is indeed the best-kept
secret fans are fortunate to discover.
On stage he is transformed, energized,
focused and very interactive with his
audience. Catch him live when he
breezes through your city. His message
will capture your heart and provoke
your imagination.

Rasselas will be performing in
Toronto on Afrofest 2014 on Sunday
June 6th at 5PM.

For more information on
Rasselas: www.RasselasMusic.com

O yes, Rasselas has also become more

entertaining, funny, engaging on stage
as I discovered at his Hard Rock event
in downtown Toronto. Do yourself a
favour and youtube his videos. They
are beautiful to watch and better
produced than most Ethiopian music
videos.
I am glad he is back. I look forward to
his performance this summer

hurdle, anything is possible.
Prediction 2014
First round exit.
Previous form
2010 quarter- final; 2006 second round.
Cameroon
Even in the face of the proverbial ticking clock,
Samuel Eto'o, at 33, remains Cameroon's most
important player. With Chelsea, in the English
Premier League this season, he has shown that
he retains the ability to find the back of the net on
the big stage. Cameroon's fortunes in Brazil are
inevitably intertwined with his own. He will be
making a fourth appearance at the FIFA World
Cup, having first made his debut in France
in 1998 as a 17-year-old. His appearances
in 2002 and 2010 also saw Cameroon fail to
progress beyond the first round. Eto'o prominent
status in international football allows him
to exert a disproportionate influence on the
Cameroonian team, which has led to clashes with
coaches, players and the football association.
This turbulence has led to pronouncements of
his retirement from the national team, with him
only then to return after discussions with the
football authorities. This World Cup is likely
to be Eto'o's final chance to help Cameroon try
to emulate the 1990 team that became the first
African side to reach the quarter-finals of the
World Cup. It looks unlikely, given the paucity
of quality players on the team and the opposition
they face from Brazil, Mexico and Croatia.
Prediction 2014
First round exit, with Brazil favourites and
Croatia or Mexico to take second place.
Previous form
2010 first round; 2002 first round.
Algeria
When Sofiane Feghouli chose to play for Algeria
over France, it was to be a reversal of the trend
that had seen the likes of Zinedine Zidane
represent Les Bleus at the highest level. The
talented Feghouli made his debut for Algeria
in 2011 and has not looked back. He played a
pivotal role in Algeria's qualification in the 2014
World Cup. If the Algerian side are to have any
impact in Brazil, much depends on the form he
shows at the tournament. His time in the Spanish
league with Valencia has allowed him to polish
the skills he showed as his career evolved in
France. After years in the doldrums following a
protracted war against Islamic fundamentalists

peak of his powers, he seeks to bring the same
level of achievement to an Ivorian team that has
flattered to deceive for the best part of a decade.
Pundits believe that this Ivorian team does not
have the quality of players who were expected
to dominate African football in the mid-2000s.
With Didier Drogba now past his best form and
Kolo Tour in the final stages of his career, their
replacements are hardly of the same stature. In
the past, gross indiscipline and clashes of egos
undid all the hard work the team put in once they
got to the tournament. There is also the matter
of their inexperienced coach Sabri Lamouchi,
who is still to convince that he is capable of
managing a team at the highest levels of the
game. One plus in their favour is a group that
is regarded to be the weakest, with Colombia,
Greece and Japan as first-round opponents.
Prediction 2014
Quarter-final, if the players are in the right frame
of mind and they get a favourable draw.
Previous form 2010
first round; 2006 first round.
Ghana
Andr Ayew has courted controversy since he
made the Ghanaian team at the 2008 Africa
Cup of Nations as a 17-year-old. Some fans
questioned whether he had done enough to
earn his place or if he was being included for
sentimental value as the son of Ghana's greatest
player, Abedi Pele. Ayew won over his critics
through his swashbuckling displays for the
Black Stars, running himself into the ground
in every match. In 2009, he captained Ghana's
youth team to success at the U-20 World Cup.
In 2013, Andr and his younger brother Jordan
announced their retirement from the national
team after a disagreement with coach Kwesi
Appiah. They returned five months later,
after the intervention of Ghana's President
John Dramani Mahama. The team has made a
seamless transition from one era to another with
stalwarts like John Mensah, Anthony Annan and
John Paintsil giving way to a new generation
that includes the Ayew brothers, Abdul Majeed
Waris, Jonathan Mensah, Dominic Adiyiah and
Emmanuel Agyemang-Badu. In a group that
includes Germany, Portugal and the United
States, Ghana will need to be at their very best
to progress beyond the first round, after reaching
the second round and quarter- finals in previous
tournaments. If they can surmount the first

in the country in the 1990s, Algeria returned

to the World Cup in South Africa in 2010, 24
years after their last appearance. They gave a
solid, if unspectacular, performance. They held
England to a goalless draw and for large parts
of the match outplayed their more experienced
foe. This time around they go to the World Cup
a more refined team. In a group with Belgium,
Russia and South Korea, they face opposition
that will be difficult to beat. They will have to
raise their level a notch to eke out a place in the
second round.
Prediction 2014
First-round exit. Russia and Belgium favoured
to go through.
Previous form
2010 first round.
Nigeria
When Nigeria surprised African football by
winning the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations, they
owed much to the finishing power of striker
Emmanuel Emenike. He was one of the players
elevated to the starting line-up by the then newly
appointed coach Stephen Keshi. After years of
disappointing performances by the national team,
Keshi opted for a wholesale change, excluding
many of the established players who had failed
to deliver. Though Emenike may lack the polish
of past heroes like Jay-Jay Okocha or Nwankwo
Kanu, he epitomises the new generation of
players with his never-say-die attitude and effort.
The Nigerian team under Keshi has taken the
country back to the World Cup. They have done
so without much glamour, preferring instead to
rely on endeavour and discipline, two attributes
that were previously missing. The players may
not be at the biggest clubs in Europe or be the
most recognised names in the game today, but
the team's spirit and will to win more than makes
up for their lower profiles. In a group made up of
Argentina, Bosnia-Herzegovina and Iran, they
have the potential to target second place, behind
favourites Argentina, to get to the second round.
Prediction 2014
Second round with Argentina.

2010 first round.

Premier Kathleen Wynne

Understood The Electorate Better

of the NDP, is there any reason to support

them anymore?

Premier Kathleen Wynne

By the time TVO's Steve Paikin declared
the government of Kathleen Wynne reelected at 10:43 p.m., the MPP from Don
Valley West had made history as the first
elected woman Premier of Ontario. Soon
after, he would declare hers as a majority
government.
In the words of former Progressive
Conservative MPP Peter Shurman,
the reason Kathleen Wynne won was
precisely because she was and still is
the "best salesperson" of the decade old,
scandal-ridden Liberal brand in Ontario.
In the election, she faced a Tea Partylike candidate in Tim Hudak and a nonprincipled and surprisingly populist voice
in Andrea Horwath.
Both of these candidates underestimated
the electorate as they moved their
respective parties to the far right. The
NDP was even criticized by its core
supporters in the middle of the election
for venturing into unknown territory
in a publicly released letter by NDP
heavyweights such as Michele Landsberg
and Winnie Ng.
"In this election, we are seriously
considering not voting NDP," and "from
what we can see you are running to the
right of the Liberals in an attempt to win
Conservative votes. It is not clear whether
you have given up on progressive voters
or you are taking them for granted," the
letter read.
The party activists responded by calling
the authors of the letter as "old NDP" -mirroring the second class language of
one-time American Secretary of Defense
Donald Rumsfeld who once called
Germany and France "old Europe" for not
blindly supporting the Iraq war.
This gave ammunition for local Liberal
candidates to attack the NDP on the
ground and gave way for the defeat of
MPPs such as Davenport MPP Johan
Schein, the uninspiring Beaches East
York's Michael Prue and the antique
Trinity Spadina's Rosario Marchese.
Once you take the progressive signature

Tim Hudak embraced a set of ideals that

seemed far to the right and full of bad
mathematics. He missed the opportunity
to take the party to where successful
Progressive Conservative Premier's such
as Bill Davis, John Robarts and Leslie
Frost did. He attempted to embrace the
former Premier Mike Harris Common
Sense Revolution era of two decades ago
instead of his own. He failed just the way
Ernie Eves did in 2003.
Ontario lives in the political radical middle
and is more moderate -- in principle, ideas
and people -- than assumed. Kathleen
Wynne understood that more than either
the PCs under Hudak or the ONDP under
Horwath.
Just look at the results. For the first time
ever, the Liberals have more diversity
in their caucus including a record three
black MPPs elected at the same time
in Michael Coteau, Mitzie Hunter and
Granville Anderson. This was no accident
as diversity has been a big mojo for this
Premier.
In celebration of her victory, she remarked
how, as a woman and a lesbian, if "I can
become Premier, anybody can become
one." She was obviously reflecting the
talent and future leadership candidacy
of MPPs such as Michael Coteau of Don
Valley East and Yaser Naqvi of Ottawa
Center.
Wynne also made a comeback kid out of
former Prime Minister Paul Martin, who
tasted a humbling electoral defeat almost
a decade ago in Ottawa. Not only did he
endorse and had a role in the campaign
but he also became her top adviser in
the Liberal's signature campaign idea
-- the new Ontario Pension Plan. His
once defeated, neglected and ridiculed
senior advisers -- Richard Mahoney, Tim
Murphy and David Herle -- even managed
the winning campaign against former
Chretien Lieutenants such as Warren
Kinsella, who have in recent months been
strangely working and endorsing a slew
of NDP candidates from Olivia Chow, Joe
Cressy to Johan Schein.
The 25th Premier of Ontario deserves
our congratulations. That is whether one
supported her or not.

Harper Government announces funding for

Rouge National Urban Park in the Greater
Toronto Area

TORONTO,
Ontario,
-- The
Honourable Peter Kent, Canadas Environment
Minister and Minister responsible for Parks
Canada, and the Honourable Jim Flaherty,
Minister of Finance and Minister responsible
for the Greater Toronto Area (GTA), today
announced funding from Canadas Economic
Action Plan 2012 towards the establishment
of Rouge National Urban Park and presented
the proposed Study Area for the park, during
a meeting held today with Aboriginal and
community partners, and a broad range of
stakeholders.

The
Harper
Government
is
committed to protecting and presenting
Canadas natural beauty and to create Canadas
first national urban park in the Rouge Valley of
the GTA, said Minister Flaherty. Today, we are
excited to follow through on that commitment
by providing over $140 million over the next
10 years and over $7.5 million ongoing to bring
to fruition the dream of a peoples park in the
GTA. This national urban park will become
a place of national significance and will be
enjoyed for generations.

Our Government is proud of the
outstanding collaboration with so many
provincial, municipal, Aboriginal, youth and
community partners as we move forward in

creating this unique protected area in the heart

of the GTA, said Minister Kent. We are also
pleased to share the proposed Study Area for
Rouge National Urban Park, which fulfills the
original vision for a contiguous network of
lands reaching from Lake Ontario in the south
all the way north to the Oak Ridges Moraine.

The Government of Canada also
announced the creation of a Transition Advisory
Committee to support Parks Canadas decisionmaking on the establishment process and
interim management of the park. Appointments
to the Transition Advisory Committee will be
made in the coming weeks by Minister Kent
and will ensure the diversity of interests in
Rouge National Urban Park are represented.

This is a chance of a lifetime to be
part of something innovative that will leave
a lasting legacy; to work together towards
building something very special, said Minister
Kent. With this federal funding, we can now
officially move forward with the establishment
process and, as such, I am pleased to launch
the public involvement phase beginning this
summer. I encourage all Canadians, especially
those located in the GTA, to get involved, to
provide their input and to be a part of making
history here in our great nation.

Toronto's City Planning division working

to improve public engagement in the
planning process

The City of Toronto's City Planning division

has launched a new initiative called Growing
Conversations. This initiative seeks to improve
the relationship between the City of Toronto
and its residents and stakeholders through a
better community engagement process.
Growing Conversations will be launched
officially on Tuesday, June 24 from 6:30 to
9 p.m. at the Northern District Library, 40
Orchard View Blvd. (in the Yonge Street/
Eglinton Avenue area). All members of the
public are welcome to attend this drop-in event.

"Engaging our residents in conversations

about city building builds a stronger city," said
Councillor Peter Milczyn (Ward 5 Etobicoke
Lakeshore), Chair of the Planning and Growth
Management Committee. "We've seen some
really successful examples of that happening
here in Toronto, and certainly there are lessons
to be learned from elsewhere. What Growing
Conversations will do is help us to apply those
best practices to all of our engagement efforts,
which will ultimately lead to better planning
outcomes."

"The vision of Growing Conversations
is to make Toronto the most engaged city in
North America," said Chief Planner Jennifer
Keesmaat. "My hope is that improving the
quality of our conversations will result in
planning outcomes that better reflect the vision
and values of residents and the communities in
which they live."

The launch event on June 24 will be
the public's official introduction to the Growing
Conversations process, offering attendees
an opportunity to become acquainted with
its objectives, timeline and features. A short

information session will be held at 7 p.m. and

again at 8 p.m. A series of interactive display
panels will help staff collect input on a variety
of questions.
There are five key objectives for Growing
Conversations:
Provide a better understanding of the strengths
and weaknesses of the current community
planning process in Toronto.
Explore new engagement models and tools,
particularly those that are intended to help
build capacity, inform participation, and build
stronger relationships between the community,
stakeholders and the City of Toronto.
Explore opportunities and best practices
related to implementing community planning
advisory groups in Toronto.
Explore opportunities to broaden participation
by engaging new audiences, including youth,
newcomers and low-income residents.
Identify other opportunities to improve
the quality of feedback received through the
community planning process.

Growing Conversations will include
four key elements: a youth engagement strategy
targeting youth ages 18 to 30; an ethnic media
strategy targeting the top five fastest-growing
language groups in the city; a key stakeholders
partnership strategy to build stronger
relationships between City Planning and key
stakeholders who will help to broaden the City's
engagement reach; and an open data framework
to establish clear guidelines for the release of
City Planning's data.

Those four elements will together
lead to a new engagement action plan, which is
expected to be completed a year from now.

Tewodros Beharu: Ethiopias

prosecutor from hell in America

innocent people whose only crime was exposing

and challenging the corruption and tyranny of the
TPLF.

(WAN-IFRA) This Golden Pen is more

important than food, medicine and water. It
materializes the support and shows that he
is not forgotten. That he is one of us. That
an attack on one journalist is an attack on
us all and that jailing a journalist is a crime
against humanity, Swedish journalist Martin
Schibbye says, accepting the 2014 Golden Pen
of Freedom, the annual press freedom prize
of the World Association of Newspapers and
News Publishers (WAN-IFRA), on behalf of
imprisoned Ethiopian publisher, journalist and
blogger Eskinder Nega.
The honour is formally bestowed on Nega
in a ceremony at the 66th World Newspaper
Congress, under way in the Italian city of
Torino this week, where more than 1,000 media
industry representatives have gathered.
Nega is serving an 18-year jail sentence in Addis
Ababas notorious Kaliti prison, convicted on
trumped-up terrorism charges after daring to
wonder in print whether the Arab Spring could
reach Ethiopia, and for criticising the very
anti-terrorism legislation under which he was
charged. Arrested in 2011, he was sentenced on
23 January 2012 and denounced as belonging to
a terrorist organisation.
Imprisoned at least seven times in the past decade
for committing fearless acts of journalism,
Nega is a celebrated intellectual and a relentless
fighter for freedom of expression. Eskinder
Nega has become an emblem of Ethiopias
recent struggle for democracy, World Editors
Forum President Eric Bjerager says, delivering
the Golden Pen during the opening ceremony
of the World Newspaper Congress and the
World Editors Forum in Torino. No stranger to
prison, he is also an unforgettable warning to
every working Ethiopian journalist and editor
that the quest to create a just, free society comes
with a heavy price, Bjerager says. The honour
is formally bestowed on Nega in a ceremony at
the 66th World Newspaper Congress
Negas former prisonmate, Swedish journalist
Martin Schibbye, accepts the award on the
jailed journalists behalf, at the invitation of
Negas family. He paints a dark picture of life
inside Kaliti Prison. The rooms are more
like barns with concrete floors, and it is so
crowded that you have to sleep on your side,
he says. Prisoners are packed likes slaves on a
slaveship. Once a month an inmate leaves with
his feet first.
But disease and torture are not the hardest part
of life inside Kaliti, according to Schibbye.
It (is) the fear of speaking. Its not the guard
towers with machine guns that keep the prison
population calm. It is the geography of fear.
People who speak politics are taken away. They
disappear. Schibbye is a freelance journalist
who was jailed for 14 months in Kaliti Prison,
along with his photographer Johan Persson.
They were pardoned and released in September
2012.
In (Kaliti), fearless people like Eskinder Nega
helped the whole prison population to keep their
dignity. By still writing. Protesting. Not giving
up. He helped us all maintain our humanity. But
there is one thing I know that even Eskinder
fears. That is to be forgotten, Schibbye says.
When youre locked up as a prisoner of
conscience, this is the greatest fear, and the
support from the outside is what keeps you
going. This Golden Pen Award will not set him
free tomorrow, but it will ease his day today.
He will go with his head high knowing that
he is there for a good cause. That the pain and
suffering has a meaning.
WEF President Erik Bjerager tells the ceremony
that the world needs to watch the creeping threat
of anti-terrorism legislation being used to target
journalists. Ethiopia continues to resort to antiterrorism legislation to silence opposition and

shackle the press. Alarmingly, beyond Ethiopia,

countless states around the world are misusing
anti-terrorism legislation to muzzle journalists,
bloggers and freedom of expression advocates,
Bjerager says. Research suggests that over half
of the more than 200 journalists in jail last year
were being held on anti-state charges. Let me
be clear: Journalism is not terrorism. Politicians
should not abuse the notion of national security
to protect the government, powerful interests or
particular ideologies, or to prevent the exposure
of wrongdoing or incompetence.
Schibbye concludes his acceptance speech,
reading from a moving letter penned by Nega to
his eight-year-old son. It was smuggled out of
Kaliti prison: The pain is almost physical. But
in this plight of our family is embedded hope
of a long suffering people. There is no greater
honour. We must bear any pain, travel any
distance, climb any mountain, cross any ocean
to complete this journey to freedom. Anything
less is impoverishment of our soul. God bless
you, my son. You will always be in my prayers.
Schibbye tells a tearful audience: When I
read these words by Eskinder I know that they
will never break him. Because he is in peace
with himself. He knows that even though he
is chained, robbed of his physical freedom,
the freedom to talk or to be silent, the freedom
to drink or eat, and even to shit. He knows, as
do all prisoners of conscience, that you have it
in you to keep the most valuable, the freedom
that nobody can take from you, the freedom to
determine who you want to be. Eskinder is a
journalist. And every day he wakes up in the
Kaliti prison is just another day at the office.
Nine more journalists were jailed in the past
month in Ethiopia, as the election campaign
started. The crackdown was a flashing alarm
to the world that no one is safe. That there is a
hunting season for journalists in Addis Abeba.
But despite this difficult situation there is light,
Schibbye says.
Eskinder Negas courage has turned out to be
contagious; a new generation is stepping up. A
generation of young cheetahs have been taking
enormous risks writing, tweeting and speaking
truth to power, demanding the jailed to be
released. It is hopeful. It shows that they can
jail journalists but they can newer succeed in
jailing journalism. Words led Eskinder Nega to
the Kaliti prison. And in the end it must also
be words that set him free, Schibbye tells a
clearly emotional audience.
When I see this Golden Pen of his, I look back,
and think of Eskinder who is left behind in the
chaos, on the concrete floor, between walls of
corrugated steel I feel sick to the stomach. But
then I remember his smile and his strength and
I think that at the end of the day, its not us that
are fighting for his freedom but rather he who
is fighting for ours. Ayzoh Eskinder! Ayzoh!
(translation: be strong, chin up).
Note: The Golden Pen of Freedom is an annual
award made by WAN-IFRA to recognise the
outstanding action, in writing or deed, of an
individual, a group or an institution in the cause
of press freedom. Established in 1961, the
Golden Pen of Freedom is presented annually
and is amongst the most prestigious awards of
its kind throughout the world. Behind the names
of the laureates lie stories of extraordinary
personal courage and self-sacrifice, stories of
jail, beatings, bombings, censorship, exile and
murder. One of the objectives of the Golden
Pen is to turn the spotlight of public attention
on repressive governments and journalists who
fight them. Often, the laureate is still engaged
in the struggle for freedom of expression and
the Pen has, on several occasions, secured the
release of a publisher or journalist from jail
or afforded him or her a degree of protection
against further persecution.

teewodros Beharu
By Abebe Gellaw
Under the brutal rule of the TPLF, courts are key
instruments of repression. This is not an allegation.
It is rather a well-documented and substantiated
fact widely known across the world. One of the
worst crimes the TPLF has committed in the last
two decades is using fake laws, Kangaroo courts,
unjustly ruthless prosecutors and judges
to silence and torment anyone opposed to its
criminal tyranny. tewodros beharu.jpg
Prosecutors and lawyers in the league of
Shimelis Kemal have committed heinous crimes
under the guise of nonexistent due process.
Among other things, Shimelis is the author of
the so-called anti-terrorism proclamation and the
charities and societies law. Tewodros Beharu,
who was recruited as a student OPDO operative
at college, is one of those who were willingly
followed the bloody footsteps of TPLFs hacks
like Shimelis.
Journalists, activists and political dissidents that
have survived torture chambers, killing sprees and
all sorts of inhumane treatment are mostly forced
to go through the Kangaroo court system even
if the whole process is a sham designed to give
repression a semblance of justice. The system
deliberately dispenses injustice by imposing the
will of the TPLF under the guise of justice.
The fake and unjust lawyers like Tewodros
Beharu, Berhanu Wondimagegn, Zeresenay
Misganaw and Berihun Teklebirhan were given
tasks to persecute journalists and activists using
the anti-terrorism law. In the service of their TPLF
paymasters, the hack lawyers have fabricated
countless treason and terrorism charges against

Fake prosecutor Tewodros Beharu is no

exception. He willingly and passionately played
a key role in sending Eskinder Nega, Andualem
Aragie, Reeyot Alemu, Nathnael Mekonnen,
Bekele Gerba, Olbana Lelisa, the Muslim leaders
and so many political prisoners to the hellish
TPLF jails. This unjust man is now living in
Silver Spring, Maryland. While his victims are
suffering in harsh jails, he appears to go to bed
without any remorse and regrets.
After shattering the dreams of so many patriots
condemned to suffer nightmares just for the
love of their people and country, he is pursuing
happiness and the American dream. It appears
that the former TPLF tormentor and persecutor
has sought asylum under false pretence that he
was persecuted and tortured. To make matters
worse, he rejected numerous requests to explain
about the way he and his partners in crime were
able to convict innocent people with serious
terrorism offences and crimes they have never
committed. He even tried to blame it all on
Shimelis Kemal despite the key roles he played
in the whole drama.
Whatever the justification, Tewdoros knows the
fact that political prisoners deemed to be threats
to the TPLF are always guilty, even before they
are pronounced guilty as charged by opportunistic
Kangaroo court judges and prosecutors like
himself hired to do the dirty job. He is also aware
of the fact that the terrorists he convicted faced
concocted and fictitious charges without the need
to present any shred of evidence. They have been
denied a fair trial and the basic right to challenge
false accusations to prove their innocence.
The worst and most outrageous legal drama
unfolded in the aftermath of the 2005 elections.
The landslide election victory the opposition
had pulled off triggered Meles Zenawis panic
attacks. Over 193 civilians including minors were
mowed down by the brutal Agazi brigade and the

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

Tiananmen Square in Ethiopia

By Zerihun Shumete Tessema (Germany)

Nine years ago on June 9,
2005 Ethiopian well trained, armed and
experienced snipers shot over 120 protesters
on a broad day light in Addis Ababa. Just
25 years ago the Chinese soldiers opened
fire and killed more than 200 students who
protested against the communist regime on
Tiananmen Square.
The students revolution and movement in
Addis Ababa in 2001 was solved by military
responses. After the 2005 nationwide election
dispute, the people of Ethiopia went out to
the street for peaceful demonstration. They
were welcomed by snipers showering their

protest.

As
peaceful
demonstration,
freedom of speech, democracy and multiparty
system are taboo subjects in China, so are
they in Ethiopia. Total control and censorship
of media is what the Chinese government
known for in the whole wide world. The
same is true in Ethiopia. Journalists and
bloggers are still hunted and thrown into jails
by the Ethiopian current regime. Opposition
party is like a castle in a sky in the land of
Communist China. Anyone who dares to
oppose the current

punishment, fleeing the county to lead an

exile life or even death sentence in the name
of terrorism.

In general, 40 years ago, the people
of Ethiopia were immersed in poverty. They
are still in an extreme poverty. Although the
Chinese are still in an oppressive Communist
rule, they have grown into the second largest
economy in the world in the past 40 years.
Therefore the Ethiopian Government has
modeled only the anti democratic rule but
not the rapid economy growth of the Chinese
government. Isnt that a pity?

regime are being tortured, jailed, murdered

or migrated. This brave activist and journalist
dared to interrupt the presidents speech
because the world must know the crime done
on poor civilians by Ethiopian dictatorial
government.

President
Obama!
Freedom
for Ethiopia! Abebe Gelaw screamed.

It was like a thunder out
of nowhere. In the hall where only President
Obama was controlling the stage and air ,
this freedom seeker activist burst loud as
if it was his only and last chance to reflect
the cry oppression, and burden of the 90
million Ethiopian people. Hold on I agree
with you, although why do not I talk about
it later because I'm just about to finish? the

president of USA replied.

Interrupting Ethiopians authorities
and forwarding one's view and ideas is
close to unthinkable. You kind of screwed
up my ending, but that's okay, we have got
free speech in this country, which is great
too. President Obama gently replied to the
audience in the hall.

Had it been in Ethiopia, this speech
would have been quite the opposite. Had it
been in Ethiopia, this journalist would have
been condemned and sentenced in act of
terrorism.

We have tyranny in Ethiopia, we
love you! said the journalist Abebe at the
end to President Obama.

ethnic groups and planting hatred, vengeance

and tension among each of the ethnic groups.
By doing so, it can assure the long life of its
regime. This false, fabricated and evidently
unsupported accusation of the emperor is
designed to bring hatred and conflict between
the Amhara and Oromo ethnic group. This
cruel and racist Ethiopian government never
wants to see these two ethnic groups live in
harmony and peace. So it is driving not only
these two ethnics, but also others into ethnic
conflict and tension.
It is therefore the responsibility of Ethiopians
who live abroad to bring this cruel act of
the current ruling party to light. The world

should be informed on the potential human

genocide that may happen in the near future.
The international community should be
aware of this danger. And it is on the shoulder
of Ethiopians who live in a better freedom
than those in Ethiopia with no freedom
of expression to raise this issue and let the
international community know about it. If
the international community does nothing
to stop this dangerous act of the Ethiopian
government, then the world may witness
one of the most dreadful human genocide in
history. If there is any right time to stop this
from happening, then it would be now.

Ethiopia is the second ranked country from

the world by imprisoning and disturbing
journalists. International human rights
society reported on March 2014 one hundred
pages in Germany and different international
organization also reported...

So the Ethiopian government
is kidding Americans and Europeans by
implementing democratic constitution and
deceiving them. So they must take an action
to establish and protect the Rights of people

by making real actions. We need justice.

When the people oppose the government, the
government says the people are Terrorist. So
in Ethiopia, you cannot ask your right because
you must go in the way of the leading party or
to be member. So the government is cracking
down human rights abuse in Ethiopia through
Anti-Terrorism proclamations and charities
and societies proclamations.

Obama agrees with Ethiopians call for Freedom.

By Abenzer Ahmed ( Germany)

Freedom freedom for Ethiopian,

sir! An exiled Ethiopian journalist, Abebe
Gelaw, cried out loud while the president
of the United State of America was giving a
speech at a Democratic National Committee
Fundraising on May 2014 in San Jose. The
Ethiopian current ruling party has jailed,
tortured, oppressed and brutally punished
journalists, bloggers, opposition party leaders
and members. It was not only the cry of this
particular journalist rather it is the voice of
the Ethiopian people.

The 22 years domination of one
ruling party from one ethnic group drives the
Ethiopian into the verge of ethnic conflict
and extreme poverty. Those who raise their
concern regarding the danger of this cruel

Thanking or Accusing Emperor Menlik

By Tarekeng Mebratu( Germany)

Having heard of the accusation on one of

Africa legendary and historical emperor,
Menlik, left me saddened. I have not
found any written or vivid evidence on the
accusation of this legend on race extinct. Or
is it another of the Ethiopian current ruling
party's dirty political game of disintegration
of the Ethiopian people unity?
As many dictators use various methods to
stay on power, TPLF, (Ethiopian government)
apply the method of divide and rule to prolong
its dictatorial life. In Ethiopia there are more
than 81 ethnic groups with their own language.
In order to dominate these 81 ethnic groups,
the Ethiopian government is dividing these

Ethiopian government deceive Americans and Europeans.

By Melese Sebsibe ,Germany.

Let us see what Democracy is; it is
the natural right of people. But the Ethiopian
Government says Democracy is a process, by
imprisoning people, journalists, and others
from political Parties. As a result, many
opposition party members are imprisoned
and people are disturbed by the regime.

Different
international
organizations reported about Ethiopia, for
example, CPJ/ committee of protecting
journalists on December 2013 report

According to traditional Chinese medical

theory, acupuncture points are located on
meridians through which gi vital energy
runs. There is no histological, anatomical
or scientific proof that these meridians or
acupuncture points exist. Acupuncture remains
controversial among Western medical doctors
and scientists. Creating case studies that use
proper scientific controls is difficult because of
the invasive nature of acupuncture - a clinical
study involves a placebo (sham product)
compared to the targeted treatment. It is very

hard to devise a sham acupuncture control that

one can compare to proper acupuncture. While
some studies have concluded that acupuncture
offers similar benefits to a patient as a placebo,
others have indicated that there are some real
benefits. This article in a peer-reviewed British
Medical Journal explains that the principles of
acupuncture are firmly grounded in science,
and you don't need Chinese philosophy either to
make it work, or to practice it.

According
to
WHO
(World
Health
Organization) acupuncture is effective for
treating 28 conditions, while evidence indicates
it may have an effective therapeutic value for
many more. People with tension headaches
and/or migraines may find acupuncture to be
very effective in alleviating their symptoms,
according to a study carried out at the Technical
University of Munich, Germany. Another study
at The University of Texas M. D. Anderson
Cancer Center found that twice weekly
acupuncture treatments relieve debilitating
symptoms of xerostomia - severe dry mouth among patients treated with radiation for head
and neck cancer.

Following Eskinders terrorism conviction,

their two houses and a car were confiscated.
Adding insult to injury, TPLF was very eager to
make sure that not only Eskinder but his family
suffer the injustice. After losing everything they
have, it was a hard and heartbreaking decision
for Serkalem to leave her husband behind. But
upon his insistence, she had no choice but to go
into exile, at least to protect their child from the
unjustly tormenting and painful experience.
A couple of weeks later, Tewodros Beharu,
along with his wife Meron Girma, left Ethiopia
dreaming a better life in the United States.
Unlike the majority of Ethiopian exiles that flee
persecution, torture, killings and discrimination,
the former public prosecutor left behind the
shattered dreams of so many political prisoners
and their families.
Tewodros was one of TPLFs prosecutors, or
rather persecutors, trained and employed to
fabricate terrorism charges against political
prisoners like Eskinder Nega, Andualem Aragie,
Nathaniel Mekonnen, Reeyot Alemu, Wubishet
Taye, Bekeke Gerba, Olbana Lelisa, the Muslim
community leaders and the two Swedish
journalists Johan Persson and Martin Schibbye.
Tewdos also convicted exiled terrorists such
as Obang Metho, Neamin Zeleke, Dr. Berhanu
Nega, Ephrem Madebo, Fasil Yenealem, Mesfin
Negash, Abiy Teklemariam and myself.
In a reversal of fortune, Tewodros Beharu has
ended up among the terrorists he falsely accused
and convicted. This beggars the question how
the persecuted and the persecutors can coexisted
in the land of freedom where the rule of law is
supreme. When victims and tormentors face off,
the dreamer in the pursuit of happiness may be
too sad to face truth, justice and reality.
As Malcolm X once said, Im for truth, no matter
who tells it. Im for justice, no matter who its for
or against. Not only Tewodros but all the false
accusers and judges in Ethiopia should realize
the fact that those of us they convicted with all
sorts of crimes and terrorism are not criminals
and terrorists but law-abiding citizens that dare to
speak truth to power.
Tormenting and attacking innocent people
with false accusations and fake laws is nothing
but terrorism. Those who falsely accuse and
prosecute others are conscious criminals. They
cannot invoke ignorance or arrogance as a
defense.
Let the truth speak for itself. The truth never lies. It is
always powerful and irrefutable.

What Is Acupuncture? What Are The Benefits Of Acupuncture?

Acupuncture originates from China and has

been practiced there for thousands of years.
Although there are records of acupuncture being
used hundreds of years ago in Europe, it was
during the second half of the twentieth century
it began to spread rapidly in Western Europe,
the United States and Canada. Acupuncture
involves the insertion of very thin needles
through the patient's skin at specific points on
the body - the needles are inserted to various
depths. We are not sure how acupuncture works
scientifically. However, we do know that it does
have some therapeutic benefits, including pain
relief and alleviation from nausea caused by
chemotherapy.

Former publisher and journalist Serkalem Fasil

and her son Nafkot Eskinder, who was born in
jail in the wake of the 2005 election turmoils,
were forced to flee Ethiopia almost a year ago.
Her husband , the fiery award-winning journalist
Eskinder Nega, was convicted of trumped-up
terrorism offenses. He was condemned to 18
years in jail. The chief prosecutor in this and
other high profile anti-terrorism charges to inflict
maximum harm and pain was none other than
Tewodros Beharu.
