A study of phraseological terms: inventory and rendering from

Spanish into Greek

ABSTRACT
The present paper forms part of a PhD thesis in the field of: Comparative phraseology of Spanish and
Modern Greek: lexical binomials, which is carried out at the Department of Italian and Spanish
Language and Literature at the University of Athens. The term phraseology is defined in Spanish
linguistics as an autonomous science or as the field of a science which examines the study of fixed or
idiomatic expressions or otherwise called phraseologisms or phraseological units that means stable
word combinations with specific meaning. On the other hand, the use of the term phraseology with
regard to the Greek language refers to the phrases that someone chooses to express oneself with or
the manner of ones expression (i.e. obscene, offensive, rude etc.) In this work, the meaning that the
term phraseology has in Spanish is adopted and used. The aim of this paper is twofold: on the one hand
to offer an inventory and an analysis of the terms used in the field of phraseology, and on the other
hand to constitute a point of reference for researchers who wish to treat more thoroughly the subject of

comparative phraseology in Spanish and Modern Greek. More precisely, the phraseological terms used
in Spanish phraseology are sought for and listed and their rendering into Greek is attempted. The listing
of the terms was carried out after research in Spanish bibliography on phraseological issues, such as
phraseological dictionaries, scientific articles and papers, as well as doctoral theses.
