Central School of Speech and Drama | Project Concept 7

Project Concept

Royal Central School of Speech and Dramas BA Theatre Practice first year students were given the task of
responding to the Swiss Cottage Library. They were to research the librarys history, architectural background
and get to know its customers and atmosphere in order to create a performance on 19th June 2014.
After 7 weeks of research, experimentation and mentoring, students have responded with a performance
entitled 14 Chapters with each chapter representing an individual performance area. Upon entering the
Library, everyone will be welcomed by an usher and handed a map. This will inform them about the event
(including times and spaces performances are happening in) and will include a description of every
performance.
The performances are spread throughout the library, covering each floor with different themes, so that the
audience can choose from a range of different performances. In the atrium there will be a table-based display
with information for the public about each piece and how it came to be.

Individual Activities
01 Moving Memories
Overview
PROPOSED PERFORMANCE TIMES:
5-10 minute piece to be repeated hourly during the event.
GROUP MEMBERS
Two Performers (dancers)
One RCSSD Tutor
CONCEPTUAL SUMMARY
The piece is based on the loss that comes with the closure of libraries, whether that is the loss of an important
communal space such as the Swiss Cottage Library, or the loss of invisible residents that reside within the
books. It focuses on memories and what those memories mean once the physical space is no longer there for
those memories to be housed in. Do we lose these memories? The piece is loosely based on the novel
Fahrenheit 451, drawing from the outlawing of books and the community that came together to protect the
memories of the books and the stories they hold.
PRACTICAL SUMMARY
This piece involves two performers dancing/moving to music in the staff corridor located next to the school
library service, we will be using all the space available to explore the different levels and emotions that are
associated with the piece. This will involve the destruction of books (provided by the performers) the use of
music and possibly the use of non-staining substances such as markers and body paint on and by the
performers (to be cleaned by the performers after performance).
Performance Space

LOCATION
The staff hallway located next to the school library service
Central School of Speech and Drama | Individual Activities 11

LAYOUT
The space will remain as a corridor and there will be two performers who will be moving throughout all of the
available space. The audience of a maximum of 10 members will line the each end of the corridor in a single
line of 5 people each however audience is allowed to come and go as they see fit as this a piece that is not
necessarily meant to be seen from start to finish.
AUDIENCE
The audience will be directed to stand at each side of the corridor. A team of two ushers will guide audience
members to and from the performance space. A member of RCSSD staff will be present in the performance
space at all scheduled performance times
Health and Safety
There are no significant risks to members of the public anticipated. The performers may be susceptible to
minor injuries, such as a pulled muscle and or minor trip. See Risk Assessments for further details.
Physical Content
PROPS
Books provided by the performers will be torn in the course of the performances. Non-staining markers and
body paint may be used; any mess created will be cleaned by the performers at the end of each performance.

Overview
PROPOSED PERFORMANCE TIMES:
Throughout the event.
GROUP MEMBERS
One Performer
CONCEPTUAL SUMMARY
The performer will create a collage taking pictures of audience members favourite object they have on them,
or favourite space in the library. From this, the performer will respond by writing a piece of poetry/ creating a
physical score. The poetry will go on the board and be a gift to the person. The performer will write the poetic
responses on a typewriter. This will all go on a board using magnets. At the end of the day there will be a
collage of peoples things and work that responds to this; this concerns: human nature, peoples relationship
with objects, space and communication with one another.
PRACTICAL SUMMARY
The performer will sit at a table/or be in the space around the table, ready to engage with audience members
and inform library goers.
Performance Space
LOCATION
The atrium.
LAYOUT
One of the tables which make up the table arrangement in the atrium.

03 Sleeping Curse
Overview
PROPOSED PERFORMANCE TIMES
20-30 minute piece to be repeated hourly during the event.
GROUP MEMBERS
One Performer
One Usher
CONCEPTUAL SUMMARY
The installation involves sound, set, and a body; it explores the relationship between the death and a public or
a special functional space. In a psychological way, the murder happens in their mind, it could be real or not
real.
PRACTICAL SUMMARY
One performer in white dress, laid on the floor covered in blood. There are pages of books stained with blood
and cut apples on the floor. Sounds of apples being chopped will be played at a low volume.

which will be laid out the pages of books, apples, blood and body (performer).
AUDIENCE
The audience will encounter the scene. One usher will remain in the vicinity of the performance to ensure
members of the public do not overreact to the scene (ie phone for an ambulance, etc).
Health and Safety

th
. Monitored by ushers during library open hours.
Active performance throughout the event (12:00 20:00)
GROUP MEMBERS
Two performers
Three ushers
CONCEPTUAL SUMMARY
Taking stimuli from aspects of the library to create live art in the form of text and illustration, they will result in
the story of the library throughout the entire day, toying with the idea of fact and fiction. The performers will
work with the social aspect of the library and find more about the people that venture to the library, focusing on
the regulars and the wanderers.
The performers intend for the audience to feel involved and that they have the ability to join in and contribute
to the performances in the library. They will be written and drawn into the story and may follow the performers
around the library to observe the journey.
The performers will take stimuli from the surroundings (building, residents, books and audience) as well as
having prepared questions that can be answered and fed back for particular descriptions or memories. The
piece will create the path, linking the entire performance; it can be followed by the audience and will traverse
the whole space to connect everyone.
Practical Summary
The two performers will roll out two rolls of lining paper, securing it to the floor and walls with adhesive tape.
The performers will be writing and drawing along the length of the paper throughout the process.
Performance Space
LOCATION
Beginning on the ground floor travelling up the main stairwell into and around the atrium. Depending on the
progress of the work, it may continue into the red carpeted area and up one spiral staircase, along the
opposite side to the cafe to circle the upstairs area on the opposite side, down the spiral staircase and leading
back into the atrium to finish.
AUDIENCE
The audience will be free to engage with the work as they move around the library. Ushers will monitor the
work, ensuring it does not become a trip hazard by making repairs to any areas that are damaged by footfall.
Health and Safety
Paper being laid across floors presents a minor trip hazard; this will be mitigated by securing the paper with
adhesive tape. Three ushers will monitor and repair the paper as necessary throughout the library public open
hours. See risk assessments for further details.

GROUP MEMBERS
One performer
One usher
CONCEPTUAL SUMMARY
The piece involves one performer in the space, wearing a costume with performative qualities. Parts of the
costume will be removed and placed onto the tree (Activity 10) whilst other parts of the costume will fall onto
the floor. The piece responds to the 50th anniversary of the building and represents the performers personal
journey of unpicking the layers of the library through research. The piece will be supported by music which
will aid the audience to understand the performer embodying different eras. Also, the action of changing a
record will be indicative of moving back another layer, of discovering something new, starting a new small
adventure.
PRACTICAL SUMMARY
One person, in a costume made from a dress and with a number of paper skirts attached, moving slowly
around the atrium. The paper skirts will be detached and dropped on the floor. There will be music playing in

06 The Heart
Overview
PROPOSED PERFORMANCE TIMES:
Throughout the event
GROUP MEMBERS AND ROLE (IF ASSIGNED):
Two technicians
Two ushers
One RCSSD Tutor
CONCEPTUAL SUMMARY
The piece interprets the archives as alive and experiments with the idea that either the books are locked away
and want to get out, or that they are stored, making the content and the audience intruders.
The audience will experience the archive as alive and with the books chatting. This will be conveyed by the
sound of a heartbeat and the visual projection of a mouth moving at the end of the corridor. The piece will use
the last few sentences from a number of books (pre-recorded) and as the audience walk down the corridor. As
the audience walk further the recordings will overlap, heightening tension as they get closer into the heart of
the archive.
PRACTICAL SUMMARY
The piece consists of an installation of lighting and sound equipment which is activated via sensors by
audience members travelling the length of the archive corridor.
Performance Space
LOCATION
The archive corridor in the basement.
AUDIENCE
Ushers will escort up to two audience members at a time through the performance location. Only adults will be
permitted to visit the location. Any audience member who is suspected of being under the age of 25 will be
asked for age confirmation identity before being admitted.

CONCEPTUAL SUMMARY
The audience will be immersed in an interactive environment which will lead them to question the lines
between fiction and reality. The piece is connected to the whole event as a location on the map which guides
the audience on their journey through the space.
PRACTICAL SUMMARY
The piece consists of a tent which will be clad in paper to give the appearance of a structure that has been
made of books. Audience will be invited into the tent where they will interact with a performer who will be
writing and sticking pages to the inside of the tent.
Performance Space
LOCATION
The second floor at the north end of the library, see plans for additional details.
LAYOUT
The tent is 1200mm high, 2100mm wide and 1200mm deep. There are a small number of library tables and
chairs which will need to be moved to make sufficient space.
AUDIENCE
Audience will be invited to enter the tent by the usher. One audience member will be in the tent at any time.
The tent will not be an enclosed space at any point ie the tent door will remain open and audience will be free
to leave at any point.
Health and Safety
There is a minor fire hazard presented by having a projector within a relatively confined space constructed
from flammable material; this risk will be mitigated by flame proofing all the flammable material involved with

CONCEPTUAL SUMMARY
The piece celebrates the memory of writers as private people, as an act of gratefulness for their books the
performers conduct an act of remembrance. The audience will have a chance to perceive the books and
stories contained in them as acts of private struggles. Our piece explores the idea of invisible residence and
points to the realms which are usually not perceived in the library.
PRACTICAL SUMMARY

10 Taking Books Back to their Roots
Overview
PROPOSED PERFORMANCE TIME
Installed prior to the library opening on the 19th
GROUP MEMBERS
Three creators
CONCEPTUAL SUMMARY
Creating a hub in the centre of the library, an area that invites the audience to simply talk, appreciate the
structure and spark conversation. The group will create a tree to counter-act the destruction of trees in the
creation of books. In a positive way the tree will illustrate new life from recycling old books, in an ironic way of
turning them back in to what they once were. The structure will be made almost entirely out of old books with
branches stretching out of the trunk to show the literal words and the stories they tell spilling into reality. Small
figures will be placed on the tree branches to represent the juxtaposition of silent stories vs visual stories.
PRACTICAL SUMMARY
We are building our tree structure out of books offsite and installing it in the space the night before, it is then
there throughout the day to act as a visual installation but also an invitation for people to congregate, spark
conversation or simply sit around the piece in silence. We wanted to bring something new and fresh into the
building, adding color and life in a possible alternative way, with this we wanted to bring the outside in and with
this the idea of this outside tree structure. The piece will be a visual installation, and therefore enforce that it
should not be touched.
Performance Space
LOCATION
The atrium
LAYOUT
The structure will stand at 8ft high with a 2ft x 2ft base.
AUDIENCE
The audience will be free to engage with the work as they move around the library.
Health and Safety
The construction of the tree is the main health and safety consideration, ensuring the structure will not
collapse under its own weight and that it will not be possible to fall over if a member of the public collides with
it. The design of the structure will be guided by tutors. The whole structure will be assembled and tested for
stability at RCSSD prior to being installed at the library.

LARGE ITEMS
The core of the structure is an eight foot aluminium scaffold bar which is secured in a tank trap metal base.
The base will be anchored with 200kg of weight. The form of the tree is made in a number of small sections,
making it easy to assemble and disassemble.
The trunk sections are made with books placed back to back in a circular fashion; these are then first joined
together with each book being drilled through at the top and bottom, then threaded through with two plastic
cable ties. With the books formed around a cardboard tube core, the covers are then glued to adjacent book,
adding extra strength and rigidity. These book cylinders can then be stacked onto the scaffold bar, forming
the trunk of the tree.
The branches are constructed from chicken wire, which is then coated in a layer papier-mch formed of book
pages and glue. They are attached to the scaffold bar with trailing strands of wire which are wrapped around
the bar and twisted tight with a pair of pliers.

11 The Importance of Imagination
Overview
PROPOSED PERFORMANCE TIMES
10 minutes piece to be repeated hourly during the event, some parts throughout the event.
GROUP MEMBERS
Two performers
CONCEPTUAL SUMMARY
This is a political comment on how we wish for young peoples imagination to not be repressed by the state
education system.
PRACTICAL SUMMARY
One performer will be trapped in the left-hand side glass room (if you were entering the library); he will be
drawing on sheets of paper which will be attached to the wall with masking tape. The other performer, wearing
a Michael Gove mask, will sing I Want To Break Free from the right-hand side glass room and then move
across the entrance hall to the opposite glass room.
Performance Space
LOCATION
The two glass rooms by the entrance to the Library
LAYOUT
The glass rooms will be emptied of as much furniture as permitted. There will be a table and chair in the
centre of both of the glass rooms. In the right-hand glass room there will be a speaker on top of the
chair/table.

CONCEPTUAL SUMMARY
Four band musicians playing brass instruments begin to play parts of a tune which cannot be deciphered.
These performers begin playing at four corners of the library and play as they move towards each other
meeting in the atrium playing as everyone leaves and lead everyone out of the library. As they come together
they begin to play the happy birthday tune.
PRACTICAL SUMMARY
Four musicians enter the building at 4:00pm they slowly walk to the four corners of the library on the second
floor. They begin to put on their band uniforms once they have reached their places after having explored the
library on their way. They then open their instrument cases and start to play. After five minutes in that location
they slowly walk in a curve as if mirroring the shape of the building as they play music. They continue down
the nearest spiral staircase around the respective curve area of the 1
st
floor. They will then move into the
atrium and stand in each corner. This is when happy birthday will begin to play, after the pace of the music
has been picked up and much attention has been gathered they will walk and play in single file out of the
