Parent Information for Mrs.

Shepherd’s’ Class
Mrs. Karen Shepherd
439-3000
kshepherd@hoover.k12.al.us

1. School begins each day at 7:45 and ends at 2:45.

2. If your child comes before 7:30, they go to the
lunchroom.
3. If your child comes after 7:45, they go to the office
for a late pass.
4. Please send a note :
• when your child misses school explaining the
reason for their absence. The office will consider
any absence unexcused until a note is on file.
• when you know in advance your child will be
checked out.
• if your child is to go home a different way.
• NO CHANGES WITHOUT A WRITTEN NOTE FROM
THE PARENT. In case of an emergency you can
call the office. This is for their safety.
5. Lunch costs $1.80. They may bring their lunch
money in an envelope with their name and mine on
it. Always send any money to school this way.
Label lunches they bring from home. Our lunch
time is 10:54-11:24. Join us any time except for the
first week of school. Please help your child memorize
their lunch number if they don’t already know it. First
Graders may buy a treat on Thursdays only. Treats
cost $.75- $1.00.
6. We go to PE everyday so make sure your child
dresses comfortably. Wear tennis shoes and socks.
We go outside everyday unless the weather is too
rainy or there is an unsafe air quality. Please label
any jackets or sweaters. It saves time and your
money.
7. We will have a snack break each day. Choose to
send healthy snacks like crackers, fruit, pretzels, or
cereal. Refrain from sweets. Please no juice or drink
boxes. According to research, water is best for “brain
work”. We will have water with our snacks. They may
bring an empty water bottle. We can fill it with water
from the water fountain. Don’t worry about getting it
cold. This prevents backpack floodings!
8. No toys unless I request them. Any other items may
come for our studies or information your child finds
interesting to share.
9. We celebrate birthdays with a card written by each
classmate. Do not send cookies or cupcakes since we
can have only one treat each month. Then we can
have class treats for holidays. Please do not send
party invitations to school unless everyone is invited.
I will send a list of the class names, phone numbers,
and addresses. If you do not want your information
published, let me know. Otherwise, I will go ahead
and release them.
10. If you need to reach me, call the school and I will
call you as soon as I can or you can email me. There
are two system-wide conferences scheduled for
October and February. I am available most other
days to meet during P.E.
11. Your child needs lots of rest during the school
year. I encourage an early bedtime of 8:00p.m.
Remember, no naps in first grade!!
12. We will have a December party and an end-of-the-
year party. There will also be special treat days such
as Valentine’s Day.
13. We will go on at least three field trips this year.
More information on them will follow.
14. Every day your child will bring a folder for notes
from school and a spiral notebook with handwriting
practice. Some days the folder will be empty and
others it will be overloaded. Read the spiral and sign
it. Write any notes to me there. Empty the folder and
return both every day in their book bag. I will check
them everyday and respond to you in their spiral
notebooks.
15. Book club orders come about once a month. These
are high quality books at low prices. If you decide to
order, send CHECKS only made out to the book club.
