Have you ever wished you could freeze
time? Camille Utterbacks artwork
Luminous Flux helps you do just that. It
captures your shadow on a screen. If you
stand still, your shadow fades away like a
ghost. But if you move, a screen captures your
up-and-down motion in red and your side-to-side
motion in green. Luminous Flux captures everyday
movements (like, say, picking your nose) and preserves
them for a few seconds in time, in bright color, showing
you the beauty of how you move (or pick your nose).

modern technology to make art that is

Artist Rafael Lozano-
Hemmers Pulse Park uses
your heartbeat to light up a
city park. When you touch a
sculpture at the center of the
park, it measures your heart
rate. One of the floodlights
ringing the park turns on and
starts flashing at the exact
speed your heart is beating.
Then the person behind you takes
a turn. Pretty soon all 200 lights,
placed in a circle, are flashing at
different speeds, one for each persons
heartbeat. It starts to feel like the park is
alive. And then you rememberit is!
The artists hope that their work will
inspire people to think of art as something alive
that everyone makes, not just pictures in a museum.
When you first see this artwork, it looks boring.
Its just a big white square of light projected on
the wall. SO WHAT?! Then you walk past
itand it grabs the outline of your body
and holds on. Now the white square
is shaped like you! If you dont keep
moving, Scott Snibbes Impression
goes back to being a boring old
square. It needs you to give it
something to show.
