Spartanburg High Schools Wins North Gwinnett Qualifier
Sugar Hill, GA Spartanburg High School made the trip to Georgia well worth their while by winning the North Gwinnett Qualifier this past Friday.
After a tough day of pool play, Spartanburg went into the second day of competition with a record of 5-1. The Vikings began their bracket play in the winners bracket where they defeated North Gwinnett Team B 36-12 and Cherokee High School 33-8. The Vikings made a downward slope into the losers bracket after suffering a 36-41 loss to North Gwinnett Team A.
I just felt like we were losing our energy. I had to challenge the kids to do their best since the competition was so great, said Spartanburg Head Coach Chris Miller.
Determined to make it back to the winners bracket, Spartanburg defeated Hillcrest High School 31-29 and Central Gwinnett 31-6. The Vikings later redeemed themselves against North Gwinnett Team A, the team that sent them to the losers bracket. Spartanburg defeated North Gwinnett Team A with a score of 19-15 that allowed them to advance to the championship game against Alpharetta.
We came back and won which gave us the push we needed. We played two teams that had beaten us before and then turned around and beat them. Then we came into the championship round and beat them too, said Miller.
Alpharetta entered the championship game with a pool play record of 3-3 and were undefeated in the winners bracket leading up to the championship game. Spartanburg continued to use their winning momentum and defeated Alpharetta 21-16 in the North Gwinnett Qualifier Championship Game.
The Spartanburg Vikings will now have to make another road trip to Hoover, AL later this summer to compete in the Select 7on7 National Championships. Spartanburg will compete against the other 13 qualifying tournament winners in the hopes of capturing the National Select 7on7 Championship Title.
