Homework 8

(a) What is the rate of heat transfer Qhot in watts from the hot air in the central pipe to the inner
surface of the pipe?
Answer:
The rate of heat transfer from the hot air in the central pipe to the inner surface of the pipe is
1.547 W. Therefore, this value is multiplied by 120
o
and Qhot is equal to 185.62 W.

= 120

1.54683 = .

(b) What is the rate of heat transfer Qsurf in watts from the outside surface of the heat exchanger to
the surroundings?
Answer:
The rate of heat transfer from the outside surface to the surroundings is -0.524 W. Therefore,
this value is multiplied by 120
o
and Qsurf is equal to -62.88 W.

= 120

0.524092 = .

(c) Use the values of Qhot and Qsurf to determine the net rate of heat transfer to or from the cool air
flowing in the annulus.
Answer:
The net rate of heat transfer to or from the cool air flowing in the annulus is as follows:

= 185.62 62.88 = 122.74

(d) Calculate the heat transfer coefficient at z=1 at the inside surface of the central pipe.
