Stages of Learning

When the teacher says, Okay class, the lesson is over, is everything understood? In unison,
the students will automatically reply, yes maam/sir! Lets have a quiz. Altogether, the
students will say No!
A typical lesson plan of a teacher usually compose of different of parts, that is, objectives which
sets the expected learning outcome, the subject matter which stipulates the scope of the
topic to be taken up, the lesson proper which is the crucial part, the how and what to learn,
then evaluation which assesses students learning.
In a typical classroom, as surmised by Rosenfeld (2002), the teacher usually gives information to
the students (input) and after sometime, gives a test, quiz or recitation to measure the students
understanding of the matter (output). But wait! Something is lacking. The students did not get
the essence of what they are learning. Oftentimes, lessons discussed are not connected or
related to the lives of the students. There was no integration or the process of associating the
lessons to the practical world or lives of the students or its practical application. This is the
reason why we can observe a waning interest and losing enthusiasm of some students in going
to school plus the unfavorable learning atmosphere. Paradoxically, if this stage is processed
properly with a fun-filled teaching-learning sessions, students will be looking forward for
another day with this innovative teacher, inspired and full of excitement. Are you one?
For self-inquiry: Are my students excited to see and learn from me today? Remember, input,
integration, output plus a fun-filled teaching-learning process.(Alferez)
