This document contains 3 assignments for a finite element methods course. The first asks to determine displacements and stresses in a plane truss. The second asks to derive the stiffness matrix for a framed structure and calculate reactions and internal actions. The third asks to develop a Matlab code to analyze a lifting mechanism and determine maximum stresses and factor of safety.

ME623: Finite Element Methods in Engg. Mechanics Assignment # 2 29 January 2014 Due: 10 February 2014
1) For the plane truss shown in figure, determine the horizontal and vertical displacements of load application point and the stresses in each element. All elements have E =220 GPa and A =6.0 cm 2 .
Figure
2) Find the frame is supported at joints 1 and 2 with fixed supports. Member is at 45 0. With the x-axis. The joint at 3 is of hinge type. Model the member 13 and 23 as beam-truss elements. Derive the stiffness matrix. Load P =10 kN. Area of cross section=84 cm 2 , Moment of inertia=4200 cm 4 , E=210 GPa Calculate the reaction at each support and internal action at joint 3.
The lifting mechanism mounted on a truck is shown in following figure. It is used to lift a weight 5000 Kg from position A to position B which is 5 m above the ground. At what configuration of mechanism while load is being transferred, the link DE and EF will have Maximum von Mises stress. Find the maximum stresses and check whether the cross sections of the members are enough. What is the Factor of Safety? E for steel= 220 GPa, allowable= 350 MPa. Develop a Matlab code to analyze the 2-D mechanism considering each member can take axial and bending loads in the vertical plane.
