Topeka High School takes title in Kansas Qualifier
Derby, KS Topeka High School beat the the heat, as well as their competition, on the first day of summer to win the Kansas Qualifier for the National Select 7on7 Championship Series.
Topeka entered the afternoon of bracket play with a 4-0-1 record after completing pool play earlier in the day. The Trojans knew they had to outplay their compeition in the single elimination tournament if they wanted to win the qualifier.
Topeka sailed through bracket play, defeating Aurora 27-14, Wichita East 22-13, and Westmoore 19-16, on their way to the championship game against Har-Ber High.
I thought our guys battled exceptionally hard against the competition, said Topeka High School Head Coach Walt Alexander. It was a long, hot day but they fought hard until the end and that is what I am the most proud of.
Har-Ber High entered bracket play with a record of 3-1-1. The Wildcats advanced to the championship game by defeating Wichita Northwest 30-24, Mulvane 31-4, and host team Derby 27-16.
The championship game proved to be a rematch between Topeka and Har-Ber who had tied each other earlier that day during pool play. Topeka and Har-Ber battled it out in the Kansas heat once again, but this time there was no tie. The Topeka Trojans defeatd the Har- Ber Wildcats 28-18.
This tournament was filled with excellent competition. The teams were all great and very well coached. I am proud of our boys for playing as hard as they did, said Alexander.
The Trojans will get another chance to battle against some of the toughest competition and the heat, but this time it will be in Alabama. Topeka will make the trip to Hoover this July with the hopes of winning the National Select 7on7 Championships.
