Silt

Cause: Mud and sand from


deforestation and construction
sites are washed into rivers.

Effect: Water becomes muddy and
brown.

Domestic Waste

Cause: garbage and untreated sewage from
homes

Effect: contains harmful micro-organisms that
cause disease such as cholera and typhoid
Agricultural waste
Cause : Excessive pesticides and fertilisers from
farms are washed into water.


Effect : Causes rapid growth of algae and thus
reduces oxygen level in the
water.
Oil spillage
Cause : Oil spills from tankers in the sea.

Effect : Kills aquatic life and seabirds.
Industrial waste
Cause : Chemical and radioactive residues from
factories.

Effect : Poisons aquatic life , may cause cancer
and other diseases.
New industrial / residential development properly
planned.
Residential areas proper sewage disposal system.
Treat industrial wastewater public sewerage
system.
Should not dump rubbish / waste into the water.

Enforcement
Strict action by the authorities is necessary
to reduce pollution effectively. People who
dump untreated water , rubbish and
chemical wastes into river should be
punished.
Monitoring

The sewerage department should build enough
public severage system so that the raw sewage
is treated and turned into safe effluent before
being discharged.
