Growing through Grace, Building on Blessings
June 30th marks an historic
accomplishment for our
church family! We will
reach the end of our inau-
gural 3 year Capital Cam-
paign entitled Growing
through Grace, Building on
Blessings. This campaign
marks the beginning of our
churchs efforts to raise
funds necessary to eventu-
ally build a new sanctuary
on our campus. As a re-
minder, in May 2010, at a
Jefferson Methodist charge
conference, the congrega-
tion voted to approve mov-
ing forward with formal
plans to build a new sanctu-
ary.

After interviewing several
organizations, your Long-
Range Planning Committee
selected Horizons Steward-
ship and Rev. Zip Long as
our fund-raising
organization.
Through their
leadership, a
Capital Cam-
paign Commit-
tee was formed,
and we celebrat-
ed our pledge
total at a special
JUMC Reunion Celebration
event in May of 2011. Thus
far we are near $400,000 in
funds raised! Praise God
from whom all blessings
flow! This is the most that
our church family has ever
raised for any building en-
deavor, and I am extremely
pleased with our accom-
plishment!

We have once again risen to
the occasion as a church
family, and we have suc-
ceeded in not only funding
the initial portion of the
anticipated $2 million dollar
goal, but we have met our
general budget needs during
that 3 year period as well!
The mission of JUMC to
make disciples and serve
Christ in our community
and beyond will continue.

Previous generations have
provided for our worship
space needs, and with a cur-
rent sanctuary that is over
100 hundred years old, we
know eventually the time
will come when the current
structure no longer meets
our needs. Our plan,
through continued gifting
from our church family, is
to limit the amount of debt
the church needs to assume
in order to provide ade-
quate and safe worship
space when that time is up-
on us. Please consider the
continuation of your giving
to the JUMC Sanctuary
Building Fund as we steadi-
ly grow our financial re-
sources to fulfill our
churchs calling together.
Most importantly, in your
prayers continue to lift up
the mission of
this church and
the continued
funding of this
worthwhile en-
deavor for Christ.

God bless us all,
Kevin J. Kurtz
Capital Campaign
Chairperson

ALPACA FARM TOUR
The Active Adults traveled to Shatley
Springs on Wednesday, May 20 for break-
fast. There were 21 adults present for the
delicious food and good fellowship. After
breakfast, the adults interested in visiting
the Landmark Farm to see the alpacas,
traveled to the Bridges farm. They all had
a good time making friends with the alpaca
named Smudge, who loves to kiss the la-
dies, and all the other beautiful alpacas.
They also got to meet the new baby who
hadn't been named as of that date. Every-
one had a wonderful day and took plenty
of pictures.
THANK YOU

Wilma and I want to express our heartfelt thanks to the congregation for
their prayers, thoughts, calls, cards and e-mails during my recent surgery
and recovery. Everything has gone very smoothly and I hope to be back
with you soon.

The Stories Behind the
Windows are biographical
sketches of the men and
women in whose memory
windows have been placed
in our church. The lives
of these dedicated Chris-
tians cover many years
from the early 1800s until
the 1970s. Each story
tells of devotion to and
love for this church, and
those of us who feel the
same love can be thankful
for their lives. They
helped make our church
what it is today.

ADELAIDE
ROUSSEAU NEAL
Quincy F. Neal went
across the mountain to get
himself a wife! Adelaide
Rousseau was from
Wilkesboro, NC and was
born on July 19, 1830. She
met the young lawyer,
Quincy Neal, when she
was visiting her older sis-
ter, Mrs. George Bowers,
in Jefferson. She and
Quincy were married on
April 4, 1848.

We know little about her
early life, except she was
descended from early
French Huguenot settlers
and well known early set-
tlers of the Wilkesboro
area.

She must have been a very
independent and spunky
lady! When she was 35
years old, she was alone on
their farm with their chil-
dren and servants who
were probably slaves.
They received word that
Stonemans Army was
coming! Their white over-
seer and the black people
hid everything of value and
all the foodstuffs they
could. When the Yankees
rode up, the white overse-
er led them to every hiding
site they had, and every-
thing they had was taken!

Miss Adelaide became
so angry she let them
have it! The Yankee cap-
tain was so amused at her
behavior he said, Madam,
do you see what the Rebels
have brought you to?

She retorted, I see what
the blue devils have
brought me to! She told
Mrs. Chessie Neal she des-
pised that white man
worse than she did the
Yankees, but every servant
remained loyal and faithful
to them, even after Lin-
colns proclamation!

Miss Adelaide and
Quincy had 4 sons and 2
daughters. They all lived
to be adults except for the
youngest, a daughter who
died of typhoid at age 16.
The children were:

Winston Neal 2/13/1849
Arthur Neal 2/26/1851
Joseph Neal 1/09/1853
Hettie Neal 2/25/1855
John Neal 8/13/1861
Dora Neal 2/25/1865

With her busy life, Miss
Adelaide was active in the
church and community
and lived to be 77 years
old. On November 29,
1907, she died and was
buried beside her husband
in the Jefferson cemetery.

We are featuring one
person from the win-
dows each month. We
would like to thank
Jennie Clyde Hightower
for documenting the
church window history.

THE STORIES BEHIND THE WINDOWS

pledges of $31,933.83 through

make a gift of any size, you
may write a check or give cash
to the church. You can al-
ways make a gift in honor or
memory of someone. Please
indicate that your gift is for
Stained Glass Restoration.
Thank you!

Safe Sanctuaries refers to the protection program our
church provides as we minister to children, youth and vul-
nerable adults.

Our church had a successful training on Wednesday, May
29 and we thank all of those who came to the training. The
new policy will be posted to the website for all to review.
There are three required forms that we are asking all volun-
teers who will be working in the nursery or with children or
youth to sign.
The Safe Sanctuaries Covenant Statement
The Volunteer Application
The Discipline Policy.

We request that those who did not attend the training read
the online PowerPoint, print out the forms, sign them and
return them to the church office. We will also have forms
available in the Director of Children, Youth, and Families
office. Additionally, we will offer a Red Cross First Aid and
CPR training course soon.

For safety and security reasons, there are also changes that
were made in our Sunday School procedures.
Sunday School Guidelines:
Children can only be released to their parents, grandpar-
ents, or legal guardians unless other arrangements have
been made in advance. Children will not be released to
their siblings unless written permission is obtained from
the parent(s).
Parents may make verbal agreements for their child to
ride home with another parent but need to ensure that
the Sunday School teacher or youth group leader is made
aware of the arrangements either verbally or in writing.
Children and youth will be expected to refrain from run-
ning inside the church and expected to walk quickly and
quietly to their destination. For example, youth leaving
Sunday School will walk together to the Sanctuary to join
their parents.
Children need to be picked up by their parents after Sun-
day School and walked to the Sanctuary.
Acolytes should be picked up by their parents to walk to
the Sanctuary to prepare for the 11:00 Service.

some kickball and ended the session
making ice cream sundaes! They
have travel passports from the Fruit

children checked off that they visit-

K ARENS CORNER
July marks my first anniversary as your pastor at Jefferson United Methodist
Church. My heart is full of the joy and love that I have experienced in the past
year. Thank you for your warm welcome, for sharing your lives with me and for
allowing me to be myself. I have many cherished memories and am making more
every day.

I am placing the flowers in the sanctuary on July 6th to celebrate my one year anni-
versary and to say Thank you! for all the blessing that have come my way be-
cause I have shared in the fellowship of believers at Jefferson United Methodist.
Lets continue to build the kingdom of God together in this beautiful piece of
heaven we call Ashe County!
Love,
Karen
