Riverside Police Respond to Third Bicycle Accident within the Last several Weeks
11-year-old boy strikes vehicle at Longcommon and Forest
On Tuesday, June 24, 2014 at 8:44 a.m., the Riverside Police Department received several 911 phone
calls reporting an injury accident at Forest and Longcommon involving a bicyclist.
When the first officer arrived, the injured party who was riding the bike was up and walking.
The driver of the vehicle, an 18-year-old female resident of Berwyn and an independent witness told
police the following events. The bicyclist actually drove into the side of the vehicle. When interviewing
the injured boy who was riding the bicycle, he stated that he had come to a complete stop at
Longcommon and Forest, however, his front tire was sticking out into the street and at that time and
he struck his tire against the vehicle involved in the crash, a 1999 Mitsubishi Eclipse. There was very
minor damage to the bicycle as the result of the accident.
The juvenile bicyclist was treated by paramedics at the scene but both he and his parents refused
medical treatment on his behalf. The boy's father came to the police station and picked up the boy
and his bike.
Riverside Police Chief Thomas Weitzel stated, Although it appears that this vehicle versus bicycle
accident was very minor in damage and injury, crashes involving bicyclists are obviously on the
increase in Riverside especially when it comes to our downtown business district. Police have taken
proactive steps earlier this week by assigning more officers to sit in marked vehicles in the center of
town during heavily traffic patterned period times. Additionally, the police department has made
several public notices to the residents asking them to drive with caution and for bicyclists to also obey
the rules of the road. Once again, the bicyclist was wearing a helmet.
The bicyclist is an 11-year-old male juvenile resident of Riverside.
