Words fail me
Forgotten the Spanish for shower? Cant tell Broccoli from cauliflower
in Cantonese? Help is at hand, says Justine Picardie, thanks to a visual
dictionary.
Pointing has always been the traditional way to make oneself understood in
a foreign country. What if there is nothing to point at, though- if you are in a
hotel reception, and you want to report a problem with your shower, for
example? Well, heres an answer.
Point it is a small visual dictionary that provides pictures of 1,200 useful
items for travellers. If you dont know the Italian or Japanese word for tap,
you just point at the picture, explains Dieter Graf, the architect from Munich
who designed the book after finding himself helpless in various situations
around the world.
Furthermore, Graf is clearly not alone. His book has sold over half a million
copies since it was first published in 1992, and its been used by, among
others, Swiss UN workers, and the Dutch Olympic team in Japan. Despite its
simplicity, it took Graf 16 years to research.
I introduced the book to a well- travelled group of friends, who were
generally very positive about it, but several women were worried about a
picture of a baby and a doll next to a syringe, and one man felt there was not
enough help for tourists in search for romance.
